When I woke up again, I didn’t cry. I didn’t cause a scene or run off like a madwoman looking for him.

I lay in that elegant bed, inside a place I didn’t recognize, staring at the ceiling while my mind refused to slow down.

Suddenly, I understood everything Blaze had done… no, Vhaelor. That was his real name.

He’d known we were mates from the very beginning. He’d held all the cards while keeping me in the dark.

He let me fall in love with him. He made me need him like the air I breathed, knowing he would hurt me like

this in the end.

“You were so fucking selfish… and still… I don’t regret it…”

I closed my eyes and swallowed hard around the knot in my throat.

My body ached from every wound he’d given me, but there didn’t seem to be any cure for the one in my soul.

“I don’t regret meeting you or loving you. I only regret not being strong enough…”

My fists tightened around the comforter.

Helplessness ate away at me, and this must’ve been how every lycan’s mate before me had felt.

This must’ve been how Valezka felt.

But just like her, I wouldn’t give up.

When I opened my eyes again, they glowed with the red fire burning inside me.

Varka growled, strengthening my determination. We would fight for our mate, even if we had to fight the Goddess herself.

A door suddenly opened, and I heard footsteps coming closer.

“Mmm…” I groaned as I tried to sit up.

“Dora!” Elessia came toward me carrying a basin of water.

She set it on the floor and rushed to my side.

“Oh, Goddess. I fall asleep for one minute and you’re already trying to get yourself into trouble again…”

She pressed a hand to my forehead, looking both worried and annoyed.

“I’m sorry. You must’ve been worried, right?”

“I was terrified!” she snapped, gently pushing me back against the pillows.

I looked down at the tight bandages wrapped around my torso and arm.

“We’d barely arrived when I looked over at your seat, and you’d apparently decided to take a little stroll through the woods…”

She paused as she pulled the blanket down to my hips.

“He did this to you, didn’t he?” Her voice turned cold as she looked at my bandages.

“It’s not what you think. He…”

“He’s already tried to kill you twice! Are you going back so he can try a third time?”

She shouted at me, her eyes red.

My poor Ele. All I ever did was give her one headache after another.

“I have something to tell you, but first… where are we?”

I looked around the luxurious room, with its reddish wood furniture and carpeted floors.

It was large, with a daybed near a floor-to-ceiling stained-glass window.

A massive crystal chandelier hung almost directly above my canopy bed.

“We’re in the royal palace.”

Those words twisted everything inside me.

This was Vhaelor’s home.

“Did you close the door all the way?” I asked, extending my senses to check whether anyone was spying on us.

I couldn’t feel anything strange, and Elessia nodded.

“What’s going on, Dora? What’s with all the secrecy?”

She sat beside me and leaned in so we could speak quietly.

“Blaze… is the Lycan King…”

When I dropped that bomb on her, her eyes went wide.

I thought she would bombard me with a thousand questions, but she opened her mouth and then…

“Oh, Goddess… that blow to the head really did scramble your brains.”

I pressed my lips together and grabbed her hands when she reached over to check the bandage around my forehead.

“I haven’t lost my mind. Listen to me carefully, Ele. I’m not repeating any of this because I’m sure the walls have ears in this place.”

When I finished telling her everything, most of it based on speculation rather than facts I could prove, she fell deathly silent.

“Goddess… I know I sound like an obsessed lunatic, but I swear, I…”

“I believe you. Of course I believe you.”

She took my hands, and my heart finally settled back into place.

“And that’s even more reason for me to hope you’ve finally decided to give up.”

“What? Ele, no. I need to know the truth…”

“Everyone’s been doing everything they can to save you! Why do you keep throwing yourself straight into danger?” she suddenly yelled, getting to her feet.

“Have you ever stopped to think about how I feel?”

Her question caught me off guard.

Her honey-colored eyes filled with tears as she clenched her fists at her sides.

“When you threw yourself out of that carriage to chase him, did you even think about how I would feel if you died…?”

“Elessia…

I reached for her hand, but she stepped back.

She was angrier than I’d ever seen her.

“If he is who you say he is, then he’s doomed. Let him go, Isidora. The world won’t end just because you lose a mate. You got over Lucio…”

“It’s not the same, don’t you understand? It’s not the same. There’s an emptiness here that nothing can fill…
