Cassian held Elessia close, stroking her hair as his heart broke at the sight of her crying so helplessly.
His gaze drifted into the distance, and he felt Vhaelor’s death just as deeply.
What he’d told Isidora was true.
He didn’t want a throne built on the death of the man who had treated him like a brother.
He lifted Elessia into his arms. She trembled needing the comfort of her mate. Then he laid her back on the bed and leaned over her.
“Shh… look at me, little one. Look at me…”
Cassian brushed the hair stuck to her forehead aside and gently wiped away her tears.
Elessia could barely contain her sobs. Isidora’s scent lingering on the bed only made her want to cry harder.
“She died defending her love… without regrets. She made her choice. She never would’ve lived in peace if she’d let him go.”
As Cassian spoke those words of comfort, he realized he was talking about himself too.
If a woman like Isidora had been willing to die for a cursed love, why would he let his mate go for a throne he wasn’t even desperate to claim?
“I don’t want to let you go either. I don’t…” he repeated, moving closer until his lips hovered over Elessia’s trembling ones.
“I’ll fight for my love too…”
Before Elessia could say anything else, she felt the soft brush of his mouth against hers.
It wasn’t a lustful kiss or a deep one. It was simply sweet, filling her with strength, giving her comfort and something to hold on to.
For the first time, her Omega let go of her caution and allowed that enormous white Alpha wolf to approach and gently rub against her muzzle.
His sword-callused hand caressed the skin beneath her ear.
Cassian slipped his fingers into her hair and deepened the sweet kiss just a little, leaving him somewhere in the clouds.
Tasting his mate’s mouth was the most delicious thing he’d ever experienced.
Elessia clutched his shirt again, finding an anchor in the middle of the storm.

Their lungs filled with each other’s pheromones, their heads spinning.
They were so lost in one another that neither noticed someone enter the room.
“Regent…”
A woman’s firm voice broke the spell.
Cassian was the first to pull away, feeling Elessia tense beneath him.

“Easy… easy…” He whispered the words before rising and walking to the foot of the bed, shielding her with his tall frame.
“Councilor Mira…” His eyes settled on his mother, a woman with regal posture, immaculate hair, and a black
gown.
Mira took in the entire scene and was glad she’d come in alone.
The last thing she needed right now was a rumor spreading about the future Alpha King secretly kissing a
common servant.
“Regent, the guards on watch reported several groups approaching. I ordered the palace drawbridge raised, but it’s those Alphas…” she said firmly, glancing behind him for a second before meeting her son’s eyes again.
“You must defend your claim to the throne. It’s what Vhaelor wanted. He prepared you for this life.”
She played the one card she knew would get through to Cassian.
His loyalty to the late Lycan King was what bound him to Vhaelor’s legacy.

Cassian frowned and glanced back, about to turn toward Elessia, but a distant boom put him on alert.
“Someone’s attacking the wall…” Councilor Mira said quickly.
“Let’s go…” Cassian took his mother’s hand and led her out with him.
He wasn’t an idiot; he knew very well that his mother did not approve of the fact that his mate was a servant
Omega.
Cassian stopped for a moment as he reached the threshold of the antechamber.
“Wait here. Don’t be afraid. I’ll protect you,” he whispered, and Elessia knew the words were meant for her.
She remained pressed against the headboard, overwhelmed by too many emotions at once.
Elessia watched his broad back disappear, then caught the woman’s eyes settling on her one last time before
she left.
Judging by her resemblance to Cassian, she guessed the woman was his mother.

“She doesn’t want us,” her wolf said dully, and a bitter smile touched Elessia’s lips.

She raised a hand and ran her fingertips over her mouth, still feeling the brush of what would probably be the only kiss she’d ever receive from her mate.
“Of course she doesn’t want us. Without Dora here, there’s no point in staying…”
Elessia wiped away the tears that continued to slide down her cheeks.
She would have time to mourn her friend, but she would do it somewhere she truly felt safe.
She got up and hurried toward Isidora’s trunks.
They hadn’t brought many coins, but Elessia knew where all the valuable belongings were.
She’d put them there herself.
She grabbed a small satchel and packed only the most important things, choosing nothing heavy or likely to draw attention.
Then she changed into plainer clothes and covered herself with one of Isidora’s cloaks.
“I only wish I could take her favorite dresses…”
She spoke around the knot in her throat as her fingers moved over the soft fabrics.
But she did take one of Isidora’s Estingia uniforms.
It might have seemed silly, but she wanted to hold on to that memory.
Elessia stepped into the dark hallway.
