A Harpy of a Mother-in-Law
NARRATOR
Cassian was in the thick of the battle after the bridge collapsed when he felt it.
That pain in his chest. That scream of agony that nearly brought him to his knees.

An enemy wolf’s claws slashed straight for his chest, and if one of his friends hadn’t shoved him out of the way, he would’ve been badly hurt.
He hit the ground with the battle raging all around him, but his mind had gone foggy.
All he could think about was running in one direction.
His mate was in danger.
“Regent, snap out of it! CASSIAN!”
The shout jolted him back into the fight.
He sprang to his feet and forced his way through the chaos on the battlefield.
He was supposed to be on the front line. He was the strongest contender. He couldn’t abandon his post or his people would lose heart.
But none of that mattered to the Alpha anymore.
They could have Vhaelor’s throne.
They could tear each other apart over it like vultures for all he cared. He had to save her.
His mate was dying.
But the harder he tried to move, the more obstacles got in his way.
His wolf finally ran out of patience and ripped through his clothes as the shift took him. Then Kyron bolted, running like he’d lost his mind.
At last, he broke free of the fighting and tore into a quieter stretch, racing past the last line of guards while they shouted after him.
Cassian didn’t care if everyone thought he was a coward. Besides… he could feel it.
The bond linking him to the Lycan King was still there.
The sight of the King’s silhouette coming toward him would’ve filled Cassian with relief if not for the dying woman in his arms.
“That’s our female! I TOLD YOU SHE WAS IN DANGER!” Kyron roared inside him, frantic to get to her.

The scent of her blood hung thick in the air, driving the wolf wild with fear.
A red blur came flying at him in a rage, and Kyron didn’t even try to defend himself.

And it wasn’t just because she was the future queen or a powerful Estingia. Shame had him by the throat.
She was right.
He’d sworn to protect his mate, and when he’d held her broken and trembling in his arms, all he’d been able to do was beg her to forgive him.
He’d left her at the palace, in the safest place there was, planning to take her with him if things got ugly.
How could anyone have done something so horrible to his mate?
Who could be that evil?
BAM!
The door to his mother’s room flew open with a thunderous crash as he stormed in.
But every bit of Cassian’s rage went cold at the sight before him.
His mother’s trusted servant lay on the floor, stabbed through the chest, the last of her life fading from her
eyes.
“Mother, what’s going on here?”
Cassian shut the door at once, unable to believe she’d really killed the woman to keep her quiet.
“So you did do it!”
“Son…” When his mother turned around, Cassian saw something else.
Something just as shocking.
The Councilor was clutching her side, blood pouring between her fingers.
She’d been stabbed. Her strength gave out, and she pitched forward.
“Mother!”
Cassian caught her before she hit the floor and carried her to the bed.
He pulled her hands away and pressed the bedsheet hard against the wound.
“Drink my blood. Hurry… take it.”
Without a second thought, he opened his wrist and let her drink, feeding her some of his life force.
He was a first-rank Alpha, after all.

Color slowly returned to the Councilor’s pale face.
Cassian checked the stab wound. At least she wasn’t bleeding out anymore.
“I’ll call the healer…”
“No, son. Wait… Cassian…” Mira took his hand, a faint tremor running through her.

“It’s not what you think. She’s the one who attacked me when I confronted her. You were right… this was all my fault.”
The woman began to cry, covering her face with both hands.
Cassian shot to his feet, blood still dripping from his wrist and splattering onto the rug.
“So… you really were the one who ordered them to do that to my mate.”
“No! No, son… that’s not what happened…” She tried to push herself upright, but the pain dropped her back against the pillows.
Cassian had always rushed to her side.
This time, he didn’t take so much as one step toward her.
“Cassian, I talked to her. I admit it… I told her I didn’t want that girl as your mate, but I never ordered her to do anything so cruel. But then… she started talking about her son…”
Cassian frowned as her story came out between sobs.
“She said he could take the Squire away and get her to reject you. I told her no… I refused. I flat-out refused, I swear!”
“The Squire’s name is Elessia, and she wanted to reject me… I was the one who refused,” he said through clenched teeth, staring at the woman who’d given him life.
Mira’s eyes went wide, but then she started shaking her head.
“I didn’t know. And I swear I didn’t agree to any of it either. But the second I saw what happened to that girl, I knew she’d done it behind my back.” She pointed at the dead woman on the floor.
