Mira murmured as she settled back against the pillows and pressed a hand to the wound she’d had to inflict on herself.

She’d had to act fast. She knew she’d be the first one they suspected.

How had Vhaelor survived? Damn it!

She’d spent all those years at his side, waiting for him to finally die so her son could be the next King, and now that Estingia and her servant had ruined everything.

Footsteps approached, and Mira made herself sob harder.

Her son was blinded by that woman now. Mira would have to save herself.

She could only pray those idiots had listened when she told them to disappear and never come back, and that they were far away by now.

Mira hoped they wouldn’t find out she’d murdered her mother.

She had to eliminate them somehow. If she left any loose ends… she was dead.

Cassian turned the entire garrison upside down, but there was no sign of Benjamin or Scott.

During the battle, someone said they’d seen them making their escape across what was left of the bridge.

They’d made it off the royal island.

Cassian sent his best trackers after them.

He’d turn over every last stone until he found them.

Then he headed back to the one place he was desperate to be.

He needed to see her. Touch her. Kyron couldn’t feel the little Omega, and it was driving him insane.

But when Cassian reached her bedroom door, he stopped, his fist raised to knock.

This was the future queen’s bedchamber now. He could feel the King’s aura inside, and Vhaelor wouldn’t take kindly to another Alpha male anywhere near her.

But a shout from inside made him forget all about protocol.

“Ele, you’re awake!”

Lady Isidora was sitting on the bed with her arms wrapped around Elessia. Cassian stopped dead, his heart pounding.

He didn’t want to break the moment.

Across the room, the Lycan King stood in silence, watching her. Cassian did the same… and then Elessia looked back at him.

Those honey-brown eyes went straight through his heart, but there was none of the warmth he’d seen in them when he’d kissed her… only complete indifference.

“What happened to me? Why does everything hurt? My stomach… Dora, don’t cry…” she said softly, sounding

lost.

“Ele, you… you don’t remember?” Isidora sat on the edge of the bed.

Cassian wanted to be the one beside her.

But he clenched his fists and held himself back.

She had to feel him soon. She had to.

He needed to explain that he hadn’t ordered anyone to attack her… Would she hate him?

“Well… we’re at the winter castle for that competition of yours. Did I hit my head or something?” Her hand went to her head as she frowned.

Elessia looked around like she didn’t quite recognize the room.

Then she glanced at Cassian out of the corner of her eye, but her gaze quickly moved to the King.

“Blaze… why aren’t you wearing your muzzle? And why are you almost naked…? What’s going on, Dora? Please stop crying…”

Elessia wiped away the tears streaming down Isidora’s face, and Cassian watched as she leaned closer to whisper in her ear.

“Who is that man? One of your Alpha suitors?”

Those words drove a knife straight through him. He started forward, but Vhaelor raised a hand, stopping him.

“Elessia, what’s the last thing you remember?” the King asked, his deep voice carrying through the room.

“I… well, I was looking for Isidora’s dresses for tonight’s ball. Did I get into some kind of fight with those harpies who work here? I bet it was Lady Marion…”

“Ele…” Isidora’s whisper was heavy with pity and pain.

“It looks like there are a few things you don’t remember, okay? You fell and hit your head pretty hard.”
