ISIDORA

My chest ached at the helpless look on Legna’s face.

I’d always seen her as the perfect warrior. Carefree. A woman who wanted nothing more than an easy life full of pleasure.

Her vulnerability lasted barely a second, just long enough for me to glimpse who she really was.

Then she pulled that armor back around herself.

“Don’t look at me like that. You were supposed to be my daughter…” she added, her voice hard. “How could you think I’d let you die over some male, even if he was the fucking King?”

“Mentor…”

“So now I’m your mentor? You’re not going to keep challenging me because I refused to go along with your insanity?” she mocked, hiding behind sarcasm the way she always did.

“I read in Valezka’s journal that you helped her…”

“I was just some naive girl she used, and because of me, that beast nearly killed her… I almost lost you too. You’re so damn hardhea…”

I didn’t let her finish.

I wrapped my arms around her because I couldn’t help it, even as a few humiliating tears slipped down my cheeks.

“I still haven’t forgiven you. Don’t ever lie to me like that again. Whatever it is, tell me straight…” Her whole body went rigid, but I kept talking.

I needed to settle this between us.

Her heart hammered beneath my ear.

“Let me make my own decisions… Even children need to leave the nest sometimes…”

I tried to lift my head and look at her, but she hugged me tighter and pressed my face into the curve of her

neck.

I couldn’t see her, but I caught the scent of her tears in the air and felt her body trembling.

I closed my eyes, and for the first time, I knew what a mother’s embrace felt like.

Turns out the cold Obsidian Estingia had feelings after all.

“If that life drop of yours ever shatters in my hands again, I’ll kill you all over again myself…”

She finally spoke after almost a full minute of silence, her voice hoarse.

“You have an amulet that tells you whether I’m alive or not?” I asked, stunned all over again.

“I left you the formula for the compresses you’ll need after I leave. I’m going to get some rest, since no one in this damn palace even bothered to feed me dinner…”

She shoved me aside and walked out without looking me in the face.

“What are you two looking at? You’d better not screw up on guard duty too…”

I smiled when I heard her roar at my friends, who immediately straightened until they were as stiff as broomsticks.

I pressed a hand to my chest. I still needed time, but some of the weight inside me was gone.

Trust was so hard to build and so easy to destroy.

But I knew I’d lie too for someone I loved.

I looked back at the bed.

At Elessia.

Sometimes I wondered if maybe it would be better if she never remembered all the horrible things she’d lived through.

But then her wolf… might never come back.

With a tired sigh, I pulled the blanket higher over her.

“You’ll be safe with the girls. Don’t be afraid, Ele…”

I whispered the words, took one last look at her, and left.

Her recovery was taking longer without her wolf.

I said goodbye to Karla and Miska. They were staying the night with her, and they practically kicked me out of the room.

The moment I stepped into the hallway, I stopped short.

Vhaelor was leaning against the wall, waiting for me just like he used to outside my room at the fortress whenever he was on guard duty.

My traitorous heart lurched when those deep eyes locked on mine.

“Legna’s staying until tomorrow so she can examine Elessia when she wakes up. And Elessia already has guards you trust,” he said, his deep, rough voice low in the empty hallway.

“Thank you…”

“You don’t have to thank me. That’s what a mate does. I makes sure you have nothing to worry about so you can rest easy.”

He approached me slowly, as if he were afraid I’d push him away.

Deep in his eyes, I could see that poor little wolf. I pictured him with his tail tucked, completely defeated.

Vaska had him in the doghouse.

“Elessia needs Cassian. He’ll stay with his mate, but Councilor Mira is leaving the palace. She’ll be kept under guard at the capital pack…”

“She could escape if you stop watching her…” I said, suddenly worried.

Vhaelor closed the distance between us in a heartbeat and caught my chin, tipping my face up to his.

“Don’t mistake me for an idiot, Isidora. I haven’t held the throne this long because of my bloodline alone,” he said, his voice harder now.

“Of course she’ll be watched. Do you really think we’ll get the truth out of her if she stays here?”

I saw his point.

If Mira thought she had more freedom, she might slip up and reveal where those two sons of bitches were hiding.

I still couldn’t shake the feeling that she was the real culprit.

“I don’t know why you didn’t just force the truth out of her…” I muttered.

“Because I care about Cassian. Because they’ve always stood by me. And she’s used to my aura, so it isn’t as simple as bearing down on her until she talks… She won’t say anything if she knows her life is at stake.”

“Then use the Lycan King’s method. I know you can force the information out of her.”

“Do you know what that method can do to a person’s mind? Do you know it could drive her insane or make her lose her wolf? Do you really want me to do that to a woman who’s served as my Councilor and might be innocent?”

I clenched my fists, unable to bring myself to say yes.

I knew I was being unfair. My rage was making me cruel.

“I’ve spent all this time trying to teach you to keep a cool head. Set the trap carefully, and your enemies will walk right into it.”

He had a plan, and I had to trust that he wasn’t letting the woman go just to put an end to our fight.

“A Queen can’t make decisions based on anger alone…”
