I Love You Like a Daughter

ISIDORA
Karla and Miska stood guard outside Elessia’s room. They wouldn’t let Councilor Mira past, or the two maids behind her carrying trays.
“Lady Isidora…”
She turned stiffly to face me, and my Estingia energy slammed into her without mercy.
The maids dropped to their knees, but Mira stayed on her feet, her fists clenched and trembling.
“There’s… there’s no need to be hostile. I’m only following His Majesty’s orders and making sure his Squire is properly cared for…”
“And I made it perfectly clear that I didn’t want you crossing that threshold… Or do my words mean nothing to you?”
I clenched my fist in the air, and her hands flew to her throat, panic flashing across her face.
“I only wanted… to help…” She coughed as my power squeezed her throat.
I stopped a few feet away, my eyes turning red.
“Go help someone who asked for it. I’m not buying your good intentions. You’re my prime suspect, and the only reason I haven’t finished you off is because I don’t kill anyone without proof…”
I tightened my grip a little more, and she finally dropped to her knees, her breath coming in hoarse gasps.
I walked toward her slowly.
“But you’d better pray I never find out that story of yours is a lie, or…”
“That’s enough, Your Majesty.”
The door to Elessia’s room opened, and Cassian stepped out.
I released the pressure around his mother’s throat.
She dropped to the floor, coughing hoarsely and bracing herself on the carpet.
Cassian came up behind her to support her.
“I know you’re powerful, but you can’t just go around attacking people…” He looked up at me, the disapproval clear in his eyes.
“Don’t get so worked up. Soon you’ll have the whole palace all to yourselves…”
“Isidora!” My name thundered from behind me, making my whole body tense.

Vhaelor had followed me and heard my last words.

The worst part was how it looked: me standing there like a tyrant over two of the people he trusted most, both of them on their knees and completely defenseless.
It made me look despicable.
I huffed and walked past Cassian, Mira, and the maids without answering, heading into the room.
Vhaelor’s aura wrapped around me, sharp as a warning, but it didn’t hurt me.
I ignored him and told the girls to come in with me.
I turned to look at him standing at the far end of the hall, then shut the door while he watched, drawing a clear line between his people and mine.
His senses pushed against my mind, but I shut him out and blocked every attempt he made to calm me.
“Wow, I still can’t believe we fucked in front of the Lycan King…”
Miska whispered behind me, and it was exactly what I needed to let some of the tension go.
I turned around with a tired smile.
“Girls…”
I threw myself into their arms like I hadn’t seen them in a thousand years.
“I missed you…”
“We missed you too, Dora… When we heard you were going to be Queen, that Blaze was actually the Lycan King, and then about Elessia’s accident… Oh, Goddess, we nearly had a heart attack. Then we ran all the way here…”
Miska talked a mile a minute whenever she got nervous, while Karla patted me on the back.
“You look awful, future queen… Have you gotten even a few hours of sleep these past few days?”
I lifted my head and met her blunt stare.
I was so grateful that they didn’t treat me differently now that they knew about my relationship with the King.
“No. I’m afraid she’ll disappear the second I blink…” I admitted, looking toward the inner bedroom.
The biggest surprise was in there.
The Matriarch herself had come.
“Then you can finally get some rest, Your Majesty. We’ll defend that door with our lives…”
“Idiot.”

I shoved Karla, and both of them smiled.
Having them there made me feel so much better.
I knew Vhaelor had sent for them so I could have “my people” close.
As much as I didn’t want to admit it, the gesture warmed my heart.
“That woman doesn’t step through that door. As for her son… we’ll see.”
I told the girls one last time. They looked back at me, serious now, and stayed in the outer room.
I stepped into the bedroom.

The strong scent of medicinal herbs hung in the air, reminding me of the only place I’d ever been able to call
home.
Legna was bent over Elessia, wrapping some kind of special bandage around her head.
I didn’t say a word. I just waited for her to finish.
Elessia was still asleep, but her face looked peaceful now, without any of the pain from those first few days.
“I can barely sense her wolf inside her. She may never come back…”
That was the last thing I wanted to hear. Even though my mate had warned me, I’d still held on to hope.
Legna straightened and walked toward me.
Her silver hair fell in soft waves, and her dark eyes stayed fixed on mine.
“The memories she blocked because of the trauma may never come back either…”
“Isn’t there anything you can do? One of those tricks of yours… anything?”
I stepped toward her, unable to hide my desperation.
“Not right now. But that doesn’t mean I’m giving up,” she said with that same firm resolve that had always drawn me to her.
“And she needs her mate close.”
