The Last Lycan King Is My Slave
A Mother’s Ambitions
CASSIAN
Hearing my mate’s soft laugh warmed my soul.
Anything she looked at twice at one of the stalls, I bought for her, even when she shyly insisted it wasn’t
necessary.
I didn’t just want to please her. I needed to see her happy, to watch her finally relax around me.
When I held out my hand as we wandered among the stalls and she let me lace our fingers together, my wolf howled inside my head.
A tingle swept through my whole body.
The breeze carried the scent of her pheromones to me.
They weren’t as strong as they’d been when her she-wolf was still with her, but I loved them all the same.
I managed to put some distance between us and the King and Queen.
I was already thinking of a thousand ways to seduce her, or at least steal a kiss beneath one of the awnings.
Then we spotted the rodeo in the distance, the Queen screaming while His Majesty held her in his arms.
I pressed my lips together, unable to help feeling a little envious.
Lady Isidora hated me for failing to protect Elessia. Still, I had to admit that what she and Vhaelor had was exactly what I wanted with my own mate.
I’d just gotten off on the wrong foot with her.
I looked at Elessia and found her staring at the scene.
Would I have to show off my rodeo skills too if I wanted to seduce her?
I was seriously considering it when a familiar presence made me turn toward one of the side alleys.
Someone was standing there, and when she pushed back her hood, my heart lurched.
My mother.
What was she doing here, away from the house where she was supposed to be under guard?
She motioned for me to follow her, and just like that, my date was completely ruined.
“Is something wrong? Do you want to go back?”
“I’m sorry, but I’ll take you to Their Majesties. I need to… deal with something…”

I felt her disappointment immediately.
She pulled her hand out of mine, that distant look settling over her again.
“Damn it!” my wolf roared inside me. I wanted to roar right along with him.
“You don’t need to take me. They’re right there. Thanks for the gifts…”
Before I could even say goodbye, she walked away, and it felt like all my efforts that day had been for nothing.
I watched her go with a deep ache in my soul, but I had to settle this once and for all.
I had to eliminate every threat to my mate.
Once I made sure she’d reached the King’s side safely, I hurried toward the alley.
I wanted to handle this alone, without Vhaelor getting involved.
No matter how much I hated the thought, my mother could end up dead… and she was still my mother.
As soon as I stepped far enough into the alley for the darkness to swallow me, a hand yanked me into a hidden corner.
“Son…”
“What are you doing here? How did you slip past the guards?”
I frowned at her.
“Is that how you greet the woman who gave you life and supported you through everything…?”
“Mother, the King is in the square. If he finds out you’ve escaped, you’ll look even more suspicious… and you’re innocent, aren’t you?”
I spoke through clenched teeth, even though deep down, I already suspected the truth.
“Everything I’ve ever done has been for your own good. That’s exactly why I risked escaping, Cassian…”
She took both my hands and squeezed them, her voice urgent.
“I know where my servant’s son and his accomplice are…”
“Where are they? Tell me!” My voice rose before I could think. I wanted her to take me straight to those bastards.
“This way. Come on, come on…”
She grabbed my hand and pulled me through the streets of the Capital toward the outskirts, where everything was quieter and darker.
Halfway there, with the cold night air whipping against my face, questions began piling up.

How did she know where they were? Why did she seem so eager to drag me somewhere?
Even so, I stared at her hair as she pulled me along, thinking about giving one last chance to the woman who, for better or worse, had always stood by me.
“Mother is involved with the men who tore our mate apart. She gave the order.”
My wolf sounded as certain of it as he was of his own name.
I stayed silent, the pain in my chest becoming harder and harder to bear.
We reached a rundown shack at the edge of the forest.
“We have to go in carefully. They… Cassian…”
She tried to grab me, but I caught her hand instead and dragged her toward the door.
“Let’s end this once and for all…”
BAM!
I kicked the door down and found them, of course, standing right in the middle of the room.
Those sons of bitches, Benjamin and Scott.
“Well, well. Looks like you saved yourself after all. Good job bringing us your son…” Benjamin looked at her with a cold smile.
“You brought me here on purpose?”
I looked at my mother. I wasn’t nearly as surprised as I should’ve been.
“What did you expect me to do?! They’re demanding more money, or they’re going to drag us down with them!” she shouted, wrenching herself out of my grip.
“They threatened to confess everything. They slipped into the house when those idiot guards left for the festival!”
“What exactly do they have to confess, Mother? Tell me right fucking now!”
I roared at her and watched her back away, trembling, inside that ramshackle room.
“Don’t pretend you don’t know! You were the one who ordered us to get rid of that servant so she wouldn’t stand in your way to the throne!”
“WATCH YOUR MOUTH WHEN YOU TALK ABOUT MY MATE!” I roared, baring my fangs as I stalked toward them.
I was barely holding myself back from attacking them on the spot.
But I had to know.

1 had to hear it once and for all.
“When did I ever give you that order?! When did I tell you to destroy my mate’s life like that?! If 1 hadn’t wanted her, I would’ve rejected her and left it at that. I’d never do anything that vile!”
I unleashed the full force of my murderous aura, making them step back.
For a moment, they looked genuinely confused,
Then they turned to my mother.
“So… you lied to us too, you damned harpy?!” Scott glared at her, his eyes full of hate.
“I left my position next to my mother because I thought the order came from the future king. And all along, it was one of your twisted schemes!”
Benjamin shouted in turn, and by his reaction it seems he still doesn’t know about the death of that servant at the hands of my mother.
