The King’s former advisor brought a hand to her mouth as she watched her son fight like a savage.

Not even during the battle for the throne had she seen Cassian so out of control.

Even as blows and bites tore into him, his wolf, Kyron, kept charging with his jaws wide open.

He dodged snapping fangs and hurled one of the enemy wolves through the air, sending him crashing into the others.

But he was bleeding too, and his wounds were severe.

Mira rushed out of the cabin, searching for something she could use to strike one of the beasts from behind.

Her Beta wolf wasn’t strong enough to throw herself into a fight like that, and for a moment, Mira had no idea what to do.

She never should’ve let herself be blackmailed into luring Cassian there.

Now her son would hate her. What if he turned her over to the King?

She hesitated with a thick branch in her hands… this was the perfect time to escape.

But what about Cassian…?

His Alpha wolf was incredibly strong.

She knew he would win in the end.

He’d already ripped out one wolf’s throat, leaving only Benjamin.

The two of them were tangled on the ground, each fighting to overpower the other.

Mira took a step back, but then a wave of scents hit her, making her tremble from head to toe.

Fear clamped around her soul and stole her breath.

It was the King… His Majesty was standing right behind her.

Before he could catch her standing there doing nothing, Mira charged forward like a madwoman, screaming with the branch raised over her head.

She brought it down with all her strength, striking Benjamin’s wolf across the skull.

The blow left him dazed and gave Cassian the opening he needed to finish him.

“You have to kill him! That bastard can’t be left alive!”

She screamed as if justice were driving her, when the truth was that she knew Benjamin would reveal everything if he survived and the King interrogated him.

Cassian’s wolf seized the opportunity and drove his claws into Benjamin’s chest, but a roar powerful enough to rattle their eardrums stopped him the next second.

The Lycan’s command broke through the violent haze clouding his mind.

Kyron staggered upright as Benjamin’s body shifted back into human form.

His throat had nearly been torn open, and a vicious wound split his chest. Benjamin lay on the grass, bleeding out and making low, agonized sounds.

“That’s enough. I need to interrogate him, assuming he can still be saved…”

Vhaelor’s voice rang out as he stepped through a collapsed section of the cabin wall.

Mira went pale, scrambling to come up with something to say.

“My lord, these criminals kidnapped me! Your guards went to the festival, and these men took advantage of their absence to bring me here!”

Mira began weaving her web of lies.

She could only hope her son would back her up.

But when she looked toward Kyron, he took two unsteady steps toward the Lycan King before collapsing.

“Son!”

“Stay where you are, Mira, and don’t you dare try to run!”

Vhaelor roared at her, then strode forward and caught Cassian’s wolf before carrying him into the crumbling old shack.

Mira assumed he was going to give Cassian some of his blood.

Vhaelor cared deeply for him.

She glanced toward the forest but hesitated… if she ran now, she’d expose herself completely.

Where could she go without money, forced to hide from Vhaelor like a rat?

The King wasn’t an idiot, but if she stayed, perhaps Cassian would plead for her and they would forgive her.

She was more valuable than a mere servant to a so-called queen.

While she stood there deliberating, a body dragged itself across the ground behind her. A bloody hand suddenly closed around her ankle.

Mira nearly screamed.

She spun around, kicking at whatever held her, and found Benjamin staring up at her with pleading eyes.

“Save… me… I swear… on my mother… I’ll… leave…”

Mira glanced toward the cabin and then down at Benjamin as he slowly bled to death. It was now or never.

She couldn’t allow him to live.

Her wolf brought out her claws as Mira quickly crouched beside him.

“Your mother was a stupid woman who dared to threaten me, just like you did. She died by my hand… and the same thing is going to happen to you…”

She raised her claws, ready to bring them down, but then…

“Mira, come take care of Cassian…”

She sprang to her feet at the sound of the King’s voice.

He was still inside the cabin, but if she took too long, he would come looking for her.
