Chapter 64
ISIDORA
The cart rattled nonstop as it rolled down the dirt road. With my back against the hay bales and my legs hanging over the back edge of the wagon, Blaze and I left the Estingia lands behind.
My eyes drifted toward the distance, curious, watching smoke rise from the neighboring pack that bordered us to the south. My heart was still beating fast from the moment we passed through the gate checkpoint.
It had been incredible.
A warrior had come down from the tower and looked me over with clear distrust, even though she tried to hide it behind a show of respect.
Her gaze dropped to the cloak covering my uniform, and when she saw Blaze behind me, she went a little pale under the weight of his oppressive aura.
“Lady Isidora, place your hand on the enchanted bars and let a little of your power out. The gate will always open for an Estingia,” she explained, watching every second of it.
Obviously, she still didn’t trust me. I still didn’t exactly radiate powerful Estingia.
The chill of the steel still tingled in my palm, along with the jolt of my power reacting to the spell on the gate. It opened at
once.
I smothered the smile trying to break across my face and replaced it with a look of pure smugness.
“We’re leaving. Blaze,” I called to my slave.
And with my chin held high, I walked out of that pack without sneaking off like a rat, without slipping away just to run someone else’s errands.
I couldn’t hide the satisfaction swelling inside me.
“My Lady, get ready to jump.” Blaze suddenly took my hand, yanking me out of my daydream.
I nodded, bracing myself so I wouldn’t fall flat on my face.
“Now!” he said through his teeth, giving my hand a hard little tug and dragging my body with his.
The wagon had slowed down, and we landed on our feet on the road, kicking up dust around our boots. The donkey brayed
a little, but the kind old man who had given us a ride kept moving slowly along.
Blaze and I hurried up the hill beside the road, and I managed to catch one last glimpse of him before he disappeared.
“Thank you, Grandpa!” I shouted, waving.
He waved back with a kind smile.
“Be careful in that forest. I’ll pass through here again in three days!” he called before heading off with his load of hay.
Hiding my Estingia uniform under this cloak had been an excellent decision. Actually, maybe I shouldn’t have brought it at all, but it was the toughest clothing I owned.
Blaze wasn’t wearing his muzzle anymore either, so he wouldn’t draw so much attention outside. Unlike most Estingias, who loved making themselves known right away, I preferred discretion.

Chapter 64
“Come on, my Lady. We need to find somewhere safe before night falls.”
Blaze took my hand like it was the most natural thing in the world and led me toward the tree line, where an old, tangled forest opened before us.
I lifted my gaze, but I couldn’t see past the thick crowns overhead or the undergrowth growing denser with every step.
