Chapter 98

Isidora

“No, no… it can’t be. They said you’d been expelled. They said you were dead! Lady Stephanie was looking for you so she could rip your head off?!”

“Your mistress didn’t find me because she didn’t want to. Or maybe she made up that story herself because she couldn’ accept that she almost died because of my power,” I growled, baring my canines as my red aura spread around me.

I couldn’t hold it for long, but I could hold it long enough.

“Impossible! Not you. The Goddess couldn’t have given a gift like that to an idiot like you!…” She didn’t even get to finish insulting me.

My hand flew up, and I slapped her across the face with everything I had.

Now I had enough strength to send her crashing to the ground, crying out with rage and pain.

Right in the same spot where she had humiliated that poor girl, still off to one side, whimpering.

I walked over until I stood in front of her trembling body. She dragged herself back from me, still hiding behind threats about her precious lady.

“What a shame for you. While you’re still cleaning Stephanie’s shit, I became one of your precious Estingias,” I spat, savoring every second of that moment.

Then I turned toward the Beta.

“Now tell me, Beta. What happens if I open my storage room and there’s nothing inside?” The man’s face looked just as stunned as the crowd’s.

“Or are you all going to keep pretending she wasn’t the one who attacked me?”

I looked them in the eye one by one, and they lowered their heads.

Others turned venomous looks on the servant.

“She was the one who started this!”

“That woman almost made us offend an Estingia…”

“Crazy bitch….”

As always, people were very good at turning their backs when it suited them.

“There’s no need for you to open your stall. I believe your word, my lady.”

“Isidora… Lady Isidora,” I told him. There was no point hiding my name anymore.

“Lady Isidora, for slander and attempted theft, the punishment is ten lashes.”

“Make it twenty. Ten from each of them.”

I pointed with my chin at the two thugs, who had gone white as paper.

“Very well. Bring the whip. And you two, hold this woman down!” the Beta ordered.

“If you faint, you’ll get double when you wake up!” I growled, forcing her out of her attempt to pretend she was unconscious.

The Beta stayed standing beside me. The crowd watched in horror. But whenever their eyes moved to me, I saw respect now. Even fear.

And for the first time, I understood what power felt like. The power to hold someone else’s fate in my hands.

When she finally collapsed in the dust, filthy, with bloody lash marks all over her back and her blouse shredded, I walked toward her.

She was crying under her breath, almost gone, but she whimpered in pain again when I planted the sole of my boot over her fingers and crushed them under my weight, the same weight they had mocked so much.

“And tell your mistress I’m very much alive. Tell her to stop lying, and tell her that now I’m just as much an Estingia as she is… and what she owes me, she’s going to pay.”

I spoke low as I pressed down harder, drawing a sharp cry from her, feeling the fragile bones break beneath my boot.

Then I turned, picked up my cloak, shook the dust from it, and walked toward the Beta, who still hadn’t left.

He ordered his men to take the squire to a healer. After all, she belonged to the Estingia pack too.

“Are you satisfied with the punishment? How may I help Lady Isi… dora?” He started speaking to me with respect, and with a sudden interest that died just as fast.

I saw his brown eyes look over my shoulder, and his expression tightened.

Alarmed. Careful. Without turning around, I knew Blaze was already behind me.

And he was staring at him like he wanted to kill him.
