Chapter 99
iSIDORA
“I appreciate your help. I just want to run my business in peace,” I said, slipping my composed merchant face back on and ignoring the beast rumbling behind me.
“As you wish. The Alpha’s residence is open to you,” the Beta said, giving me a hurried salute before he left almost at a run.
I turned slowly and found Blaze glaring like he wanted to bite through someone’s throat.
His anger was almost tangible. I thought it had to be because of what had just happened. It must have taken everything in him not to step in.
“Nothing happened. I handled it.”
“I could’ve torn all three of them apart. My lady doesn’t need some Beta’s help. That male….” His jaw locked before he finished.
I didn’t want to hear the rest anyway. I was tired of not knowing where I stood with him.
“Follow the men who beat that woman. Intimidate them. Break them if you have to. I need more ears and more allies in this pack,” I ordered, walking around him without giving him another look.
But when I passed him, he stepped closer. Too close. His hot breath stirred my hair. His shoulder brushed mine, and my stupid heart lurched like an idiot. I ignored it.
“My lady, wait. I took longer because I found this at an old book seller’s place, and I thought it might help you…. I bought it with the coins you gave me.”
He pulled an old parchment from inside his cloak.
It was made of animal hide and tied with a worn cord. I took it, curious despite myself, and looked up at his face. He was waiting for praise.
“I’ll check it later. Give me the rasp too, and hurry. Your prey is getting away,” I told him quietly, firm enough to keep the distance between us exactly where it belonged.
I could almost feel his wolf’s tail droop in disappointment as I took the rasp from him too and continued toward the stall.
I wasn’t in the mood for his games. Not for the way he filled my head with hope and then changed on me the next second. I wanted a companion. A real partner. I didn’t want to be anyone’s passing whim.
“Be careful. I’ll be back soon,” I heard him whisper.
His eyes burned into the back of my neck, and I knew he stayed there for a moment, glaring threats at the people who were now trying to get on my good side.
They scattered like rats running from poison.
Blaze left once I reached the stall, and that knot in my heart tightened all over again.
I kept my eyes lowered, gripping the parchment and the rasp in my hands, until a shadow made me look up.
The poor girl stood in front of me, frightened but determined.
“I… I failed you….” Her whole body folded, like she was about to drop to her knees.

I caught her right away and pulled her back to her feet. The poor thing looked miserable enough without me blaming her
too.
I knew what it felt like to be the weakest one.
“Easy. It wasn’t your fault, and I still need your help. But first, go buy some ice for your face.”
“No! I’ll help Lady Isidora. Tell me what to do…. Should I keep selling? Look, look, I sold everything His Grace left at the stall.”
She reached for the metal container where she had kept the coins, but her surprise was terrible when she found it empty
I watched the color drain from her face and terror jump through her frantic eyes.
“No, no, they were right here. I didn’t steal them. I didn’t steal anything, I swear!” she started crying, shaking, searching everywhere between desperate pleas.
“I know. It was one of those brothers. Calm down. I believe you,” I sighed, remembering how I had seen one of them snooping behind the counter.
