Galen actually looked alright. His face was clean-shaven, sparing him a scruffy, pathetic appearance. Dressed in a crisp white shirt and black trousers, he looked meticulously put together.
Only, he was noticeably thinner.
When he looked up, his eyes shifted, revealing violent, bloodshot veins spiderwebbing outward as if his eyes were on the verge of rupturing.
Franco narrowed his eyes slightly. Unsurprisingly, the man looked half-dead.
"How many days has it been since you slept?"
Galen didn't answer, nor did he seem surprised that Franco had found him. His hand dropped from the doorframe, and he turned to walk back inside without a word.
Silent and lifeless, he exuded a heavy aura of decay.
Franco walked up the three steps, shutting the heavy door behind him as he entered the courtyard.
The landscape lights were on, but the house itself was pitch black. Galen sat on a stone bench in the open atrium. Several liquor bottles and a glass sat on the stone table. Franco noted they were all hard liquor.
A Jasmine Vine grew in the atrium, its lush canopy stretching over the stone table, scattering delicate blossoms across the surface. A gust of wind blew past, leaving a few petals resting on Galen's shoulder and the back of his hand.
Galen stared blankly at a petal floating in his drink, then tipped his head back, silently downing the liquor and the blossom in one gulp.
"Did you ever bring Livia to live here?" Franco asked, taking a seat on the opposite bench.
Otherwise, why would he be here drinking himself into an early grave like a tragic martyr, obsessing over memories of her?
Even though, ever since he came of age, very few of those memories were actually pleasant.
Livia hadn't wanted him, but Galen refused to let her go. In his twisted mind, she was brought into the Carter family for him; she was destined to be his.
Her name pierced Galen's brain like a hot needle.
His brow twitched, and his whiskey-soaked voice was terribly hoarse. "I took her in every corner of this house... except for the bench you're sitting on."
Franco watched him in silence.
Galen clearly wasn't talking about "sitting."
