When she saw Nora holding onto Gideon's arm, watching them walk up side-by-side, an uncontrollable crack instantly fractured across her beautiful, pitifully fragile face.
Jealousy, bitterness, and venom aggressively tangled in Giselle's eyes, threatening to shred the delicate mask she had worked so hard to maintain. She had assumed Gideon had gone to the office to handle an emergency today; she had no idea he had gone to pick up Nora.
In her grand plan, even if Nora showed up today, she was only fit to stand on the fringes and absorb everyone's mockery.
Giselle clenched her hands at her sides so tightly that her nails nearly dug into her flesh.
In merely a second, Giselle flawlessly reigned in all her exposed hostility, replacing it with a tearful, heartbreaking expression that practically demanded sympathy.
“Gideon...”
Giselle's heavy, sobbing call rang out with crystal clarity in the quiet, solemn cemetery.
The very moment he heard Giselle's voice, Gideon completely forgot about Nora beside him. Obvious panic and heartache flashed through his deep eyes, and his footsteps jerked to a dead stop.
“Giselle.”
Gideon replied softly, his tone laced with anxiety. Just moments ago in the car, he had earnestly declared he had no intention of replacing Nora; just moments ago, he had actively offered his arm as they stepped out of the car.
Yet, the moment he saw Giselle shedding tears, the moment he heard her aggrieved call, all of his promises and that tiny sliver of peace he had just built crumbled into dust, entirely vanishing into thin air.
Without a shred of hesitation, Gideon yanked his arm free from Nora's grasp.
Nora didn't even have time to react before she felt a violent emptiness in the crook of her arm. The man's warmth vanished instantly, and the freezing wind rushed through the empty space into her sleeve, stripping away the last remaining traces of warmth she held.
She stood frozen in place, watching Gideon's retreating back. The vows the man had so confidently sworn in the car were as fragile as a bubble in the face of a single tear from Giselle.
