The Love I Begged For Was Never Real novel Chapter 97

"Giselle... please stop crying."

The man's tone held none of the severity he had shown at the dinner table, leaving only endless patience and soft coaxing.

"It was my fault. I shouldn't have spoken to you with that tone at dinner. I'm sorry."

Gideon coaxed her softly, his voice overflowing with self-reproach and heartache.

"I'll never do that again. Whatever you want to eat, I'll serve it to you. Whatever you want to buy, I'll get it. Please don't be mad at me anymore, okay?"

Giselle's tearful sobs echoed from the room.

"You're lying. You kept taking Nora's side today, and you even served her food. Are you sick of me? Are you trying to kick me out of the Hayes family just to make her happy?"

"Nonsense."

Gideon instantly cut her off, pulling Giselle into a tighter embrace.

"I was just worried the elders would gossip, so I went through the motions," Gideon's tone was entirely indulgent and compromising.

"I'll always stay by your side. How could I ever abandon you? In this world, you are the most important person to me, Giselle. No one could ever take your place."

"This is your home. As long as I'm breathing, no one will dare lay a finger on you. Stop overthinking and close your eyes. Go to sleep. I'll stay right here with you, I'm not going anywhere."

"Gideon, my wrist hurts."

Giselle's delicate voice murmured, heavy with nasal congestion.

"Don't move, let me rub it for you."

Gideon's voice was intimately close, as if he were whispering right against Giselle's ear.

That sound, that tone, that level of extreme intimacy shared in the dead of night.

Standing outside, Nora felt her blood run cold. It was as if she had plummeted into an endless, freezing abyss, surrounded by bone-chilling despair.

She didn't push the door open to demand answers.
