At this, my parents smiled. “It’s been taken care of out of state. Her hearing is completely normal now.”
Sophia’s face lit up with delight, but she still refused to give up. “Adeline, why don’t we wait until Caden gets
back? He has a right to know.”
“You always used to follow him around when you were little, and you saved his life. How can those feelings
just disappear?”
I looked down at the tea gently swirling in the cup on the table, gathering my thoughts.
Finally, I looked up and took a breath. “Auntie, we don’t have feelings for each other anymore. Forcing it
would only make us miserable.”
Jaxon sighed, clearly understanding our family’s stance. He stopped Sophia from saying more and ordered the butler to bring the engagement contract stamped with the seals of both packs.
I watched as the two copies were torn up, burned, and reduced to ashes.
A wave of relief finally washed over me.
I carefully requested, “Mrs. Hawk and Mr. Hawk, I’d appreciate it if you kept this quiet for now. We can handle
the formalities later.”
They both nodded, agreeing to my request.
However, that very night, I received a call from Caden. I instinctively thought he had found out about the broken engagement and wanted to talk it out.
Instead, his exasperated voice came through the phone, “You filled out your college application wrong?”
“If I hadn’t noticed, you might have ended up going to university abroad.”
“Adeline, I already fixed it for you. Selene applied to the same university too. Her family’s situation isn’t great, she can barely afford the tuition. As classmates, we should help her out…”
A hot summer night breeze blew past, but it sent a chill straight through me.
My heart sank to the pit of my stomach.
He… he actually changed my application?
Of course. Caden knew everything about me–my preferences, my hobbies, even my phone and ID numbers by heart.

He had paid attention before the deadline and altered my application.
I didn’t even have time to tell him that tampering with someone else’s documents was illegal.
I hurriedly hung up and saw it was already 23:58 on my phone screen. The deadline was moments away.
With the fastest typing of my life, I resubmitted my application just before the deadline.
Watching the confirmation screen load, I finally let out the breath I was holding.
I was about to message Lily, to tell her we could go to the same university after all.
Then, a notification popped up on IG .I clicked it open. It was a post from Selene.
A group photo of her and a few others skiing and soaking in hot springs. The caption read, “With friends,
with my love. To youth, to young love.”
The most ridiculous part?
She had quietly tagged me. It was a blatant provocation.
I snorted coldly, opened our chat, and sent her a screenshot.” Open your eyes and look. What is this?”
“I suggest you quit while you’re ahead. Otherwise, I promise you’ll regret it.”
The chat showed “Selene is typing…” but I waited and waited, and no reply ever came.
I opened her Instagram profile again only to find the post had been deleted.
The period right after graduation had been tense.
Now, finally feeling relaxed, I decided to travel with Lily, to visit a few nearby provinces, take it slow, and
unwind.
During this time, whenever I received a message or call from Caden, I would decisively hang up or delete it
without hesitation.
His assumption that I was “jealous” was utterly tiresome.
“How long are you going to keep this up? Isn’t it enough?”
“If you don’t reply, don’t blame me if I take Selene abroad instead.”
I ignored his threats entirely. No responses. Just blocking and deleting.
As the start of the semester approached, I simply boarded a flight abroad.
