The Luna Never Heard novel Chapter 9

Caden’s POV

I knocked on Adeline’s door nervously, clutching the handmade dolls I’d knittedone blue, one pink, just like

us in my eyes.

I imagined her surprised and happy face when she saw them, my heart racing impatiently.

But when the door opened, I didn’t see the her.

I asked instinctively, Mr.Stone and Mrs. Stone, is Adeline home?

I haven’t seen her all summer. I brought her a gift. And since school’s starting soon, I thought we could go

together.

Sophia’s face was expressionless. We forgot to tell you, Caden. Adeline has already left for school. You don’t need to go with her.I was stunned, almost unable to believe it. A sense of unease spread through me.

I turned to leave but was stopped by her dad, who said vaguely, Caden, some things, once missed, are just

missed.

After school starts, our company will be very busy. We won’t have time for visitors and we hope you won’t

disturb her again.

I left, confused, and headed home to pack.

However, when I opened my front door, I found my parents sitting seriously on the living room sofa.

The atmosphere was heavy and tense.

My heart sank. I greeted them and tried to go to my room, but my father stopped me.Don’t go to Adeline’s house anymore.

Adeline is studying abroad now. The engagement was called off a month ago. From now on, you’re just childhood friends who grew up together. Nothing more.

I froze, frowning, instinctively retorting, How is that possible? Mom, Dad, are you joking?

But when I looked up and saw their cold expressions, I gradually realized it was true.

Sophia sighed, sounding exasperated. Now that Adeline’s hearing is fixed, that last flawis gone. She can choose whoever she likes. How could she possibly still want our family!

Jaxon, why did you stop me then? Adeline is softhearted. If I’d brought up their childhood and played the pity card, she might not have called off the engagement!

Father interrupted her impatiently, You think a few words would have worked? The Stone company has long surpassed ours these past years. Adeline might be easy to fool, but her parents are no pushovers! They’re fiercely protective of her! You think I wanted to break the engagement? I wasworried about the company!

As I listened, I suddenly went numb.

After a moment of silence, I asked, When did her hearing get better?

Though I wasn’t sure why I asked, my father answered, Her dad said they did the surgery right after the SAT

exams. Must have been a while ago. You and I and your mom went back the hometown for the family gathering then. Maybe Adeline didn’t get a chance to tell you

My mind raced back to my birthday party. I took off her hearing aid, telling her those things.

Adeline. I’ve had enough of you.

I really wish you hadn’t been saved when you were nine. I wish you’d just died.

And the things Selene said when we were dating–

Caden, you passed my test.

Now I believe you don’t like Adeline. So, we can go on that date tomorrow.

Every word felt like a needle stabbing into my heart, bringing waves of sharp pain.

My vision suddenly blurred, my head spun, and I remembered that day at the mall.

When we ran into Adeline and her mother while buying winter clothes and ski gear.

After we left, one of my friends said, I feel like Adeline seemed a bit different somehow.

At the time, my mind was full of comforting Selene.

I completely failed to notice that Adeline hadn’t been wearing her hearing aid that day.
