Elie’s POV
I dropped my bag on the floor. “I was at the library all night.”
Dominic didn’t budge. “The library.” It wasn’t a question.
“Yep. Now if you don’t mind-”
“Ellie.” He stepped in the way of the stairs before I could leave, blocking me with his frame. “We need to talk about this. Don’t you think it’s gone on long enough?”
I looked up at Dominic, studying his face. He was furious about the fact that I hadn’t come home last night; that much I could tell. And he definitely didn’t believe that I’d spent the night in the library, even if it was
true.
“It was an accident,” I said.
“Right. Just like the stabbing was an accident.”
I pressed my lips together.
“Where were you really?” he asked, leaning closer. “Were you with someone? Lucas, maybe?”
I blinked. “You know that that ship has sailed, Dominic.”
“So you really were just avoiding me all night.”
“I really did fall asleep. Besides, what do you care? It’s not like we’re really together-”
“You’re still my wife, Ellie.” Dominic gestured to my neck. “And in case you’ve forgotten, you still bear my mark.”
“Does that mean you own me or something?” I bit back.
“What? No!” Dominic grabbed a handful of his hair in frustration, then released it, letting his hand fall back to his side. “Ellie, I know you’re angry with me, but I’m still allowed to care about you and be worried when you don’t come home all night. Furthermore, as far as anyone else is concerned, we are together in the traditional sense. You can’t just avoid me all the time. People are starting to ask questions, you know.”
Good, I thought. Let them ask questions; maybe then Dominic would finally get sick of it and end this once
and for all.
“Well,” I said calmly, “if you don’t like it, then-”
“I should divorce you,” Dominic said.
My eyes widened a little with surprise and hope, although a small, instinctive pang of discomfort shot through my chest at the thought. I braced myself unexpectedly, waiting for him to say the final words.
But he didn’t.
“That’s what you want me to say, isn’t it?” he asked. “That I’m done with you? That your recent behavior is enough to warrant something so drastic?”

Jopened my mouth to respond, but before I could, Dominic went on, “Well, I’m not doing that, Ellie. You can act like a brat all you want, but I’m not divorcing you over this. I’m not divorcing you at all.”
The silence hung between us like a shroud. A part of me was almost relieved that he said that, but it was small and easily shoved down. Righteous frustration bubbled up in its place. After all I’d done to push him away, he was still hanging on.
“Of course you won’t,” I muttered, looking away. “Because you want to keep me trapped in this situation until I die.”
Dominic let out a short breath. “Ellie, please tell me what’s going on-
Just then, before he could finish, the door opened. Marcus walked into the foyer, nodding politely to both of
“Alpha. Luna,” he said, looking between us, either completely oblivious to the tension or choosing to ignore it, “I just wanted to remind you about tonight’s gala.”
“Oh, shit.” Dominic passed his hand over his face and sighed. “I forgot about that.” He looked at me. “Ellie, we both have to go to this charity gala in the neighboring territory. Both of us.”
