busied myself with adding a packet of sugar to my coffee, hoping she couldn’t see the way my hands were shaking. “Yeah.”
“I’m so sorry.”
“Don’t be,” I said. “It’s my fault. I should have seen it coming, but I didn’t, and now she’s dead.”
Hanna blinked, clearly not expecting that. I immediately regretted saying it at all. I was just about to apologize when Lucas strode over and put his arm around my shoulders.
“Hanna,” he said, shaking her hand. “It’s good to see you.”
“You as well.” Hanna smiled, then looked at me. “I’m actually glad you’re here, Ellie. I wanted to ask if you’re still considering taking the test.”
“The… test?” I asked, blowing on my coffee.
“We’re holding an exam process to find our first batch of traveling healers.”
“Right.” I burnt my tongue on my coffee and set the cup aside. “I, um… I don’t know if I should…”
“We could really use the numbers,” Hanna pointed out.
I laughed a little. “I haven’t even received my official healer certification.”
“That’s never stopped you before,” Lucas said. He turned to Hanna. “Ellie is a phenomenal healer. Top of her class. She could teach all of us a thing or two.”
“That’s not-”
“This could be good for you,” Lucas said.
I shot him a look, but he ignored it.
Hanna studied us for a moment. “The test for traveling healers is in two weeks. If you’re interested, you should sign up. We’d be honored to have you.”
Before I could answer, she handed me a card with her contact information on it. Lucas took it and tucked it into his pocket, grinning. I shot him another look that he once again ignored.
“Okay. I’ll think about it,” I said with a sigh.
“Please do,” Hanna said. The hope in her eyes made me feel bad for not accepting right away.
After the meeting-a few speakers gathered at a panel where questions were asked, although I hardly heard anything that was said, just focusing on breathing and not crying right then and there we left the building and walked back to the car. Lucas didn’t say anything until we were both inside.
“You should do it,” he said as he started the car.
“I’ve got a lot on my plate right now.”
