Chapter 350
There was a large gash across his abdomen, obviously special effects paint but believable enough that it even looked like there was muscle poking out from amongst the tissue. There was a lot of blood, so! went first for my gauze to try and slow the bleeding.
“Talk me through what you’re doing,” the examiner said.
“Patient has a severe laceration to the abdomen,” I said. “Significant blood loss. I’m applying direct pressure to control the bleeding while I assess for additional injuries.”
I
I kept one hand on the wound and used the other to check the rest of his body. His right leg was also bloody, his pants torn and another large gash in the thigh.
I reached into my bag and pulled out a tourniquet. I wrapped it around his thigh, just above the gash, and tightened it.
“Tourniquet applied to the right thigh,” I said. “No other visible injuries, but I need to stabilize him before he can be moved.”
The examiner nodded and made some notes on his clipboard while I packed the wound with more gauze and secured it with tape, then wrapped a bandage around his torso to keep everything in place.
“Patient is stabilized,” I said, sitting back on my heels. “Ready for transport.”
The examiner made a note on his clipboard. “Time.”
I glanced at the clock on the wall. Fifteen minutes. I still had five left. The “patient” groaned and sat up, rubbing his head.
“Man,” he said, “if I ever actually get hurt, I want her to be my doctor.”
I bristled at the praise and looked at the examiner.
“Good work,” the examiner said. His expression betrayed little as he gestured to the door. “You’re done.”
I stood and peeled off my gloves, tossing them in the trash on my way out.
After, I grabbed a coffee from the waiting area and found an open seat. The lobby was full of other healers who had finished their exams, murmuring amongst themselves. I spotted Hanna standing by the
front desk and waved.
“Ellie,” she said, hurrying over. “I’m really glad you came after all.”
I nodded. “I’m sorry for-”
“Don’t apologize.” She smiled. “I’m just glad you’re here. I think this’ll be good for you.”
“Does that mean I pass?” I asked, tilting my head.
