Ellie’s POV

I told myself it was a bad idea the entire drive over.

I knew it was a bad idea when I left without telling Lucas where I was going. I knew it was a bad idea when I merged onto the highway heading south, the familiar stretch of road illuminated by my headlights. I knew it was a bad idea when I crossed the boundary into Dominic’s pack territory and felt my wolf stir for the first time in weeks, lifting her head like she had caught a scent on the wind.

I told myself it was a bad idea, and yet I went anyway.

The thing was, I couldn’t stop picturing what Ryan had described. Dominic holed up in the house, not eating, not running the pack. It had sat in the back of my mind all day through lectures and studying, nagging at me until I couldn’t ignore it any longer.

By the time the clock had struck five, I had made up my mind.

I needed to go, even if only to see it for myself.

But what I actually expected to find, if I was being honest with myself, was Vivian.

I kept imagining the two of them together, Dominic in bed with Vivian tucked against his side, the house warm and lit up, the whole “deep depression” thing a convenient story that Ryan had been fed because he didn’t know any better.

It wouldn’t have been the first time Dominic had let Vivian pull the strings while everyone else scrambled around him. And if that was what I found when I got there, then fine. Then I would know for certain. I could reject him and not feel guilty, and that would finally be the end of it.

The familiar facade of the house came into view as I rounded the last bend in the road, and I slowed the

car.

The house was dark. A few of the exterior lanterns along the driveway were on, but the windows were all black. I pulled into the driveway, where I sat in the car for a minute, engine idling, just staring at it. Dark. Black. Like he wasn’t there at all. Like the image of the two of them together, eating dinner across from one another at a candlelit table, was suddenly gone.
