The inside of the house was just as dark as the outside. She hadn’t turned on any lights before answering the door, and she didn’t turn any on now, just led me down the hallway toward the sitting room where a single lamp burned on the side table.
Dominic’s father was in the armchair near the window. He looked up when I walked in, and froze, his eyes going wide.
“Ellie,” he said.
“Hello.” I sat down on the edge of the sofa when his mother gestured to it, perching there with my jacket still on. “I ran into Ryan last night. He told me what was going on.”
His parents exchanged a look.
“How bad is it?” I asked.
His mother sat down across from me and folded her hands in her lap. “He won’t come out of his room,” she said with a sigh. “He was bad after you left, but the last few weeks especially…” She trailed off, shaking her head.
“He signed the divorce papers,” I pointed out.
“I know he did,” she said. “I think he believed you would come back if he proved that he was willing to let you go.” She looked at me carefully. “He’s always believed you’d come back.”
I didn’t have anything to say to that, so I just looked down at my hands.
“Ellie,” his mother whispered, “I know it’s not my place. But please, you must consider giving him another chance. Nullify the divorce. Come back. I’ve never seen him like this, not in his entire life, and I’m frightened for him.”
I felt a flicker of irritation wash over me.
I understood what was happening now. Dominic was using the situation, asking his parents to guilt trip me into coming back. All so he and Vivian could continue to humiliate, manipulate, and belittle me all over again.
This time, I wasn’t going to fall for it.
“He’s with her, isn’t he?” I blurted out.
She pulled her head back. “What?”
I stood. “I want to see him. If he’s with her-”
“With her?” his father asked. “Who are you talking about?”
