Ellie’s POV

I stared at Dominic’s mother for a long time without speaking as her words washed over me.

Vivian.

Dominic banished Vivian.

My sister was a rogue.

After everything that happened, all the hell she put me through, all the times he refused to listen to me and took her side instead, always believing she was a saint walking amongst us…

He had banished her.

I stood on the landing for a moment longer, then turned and kept walking.

Dominic’s mother called after me, but I was already moving down the hallway toward his room. The door was closed, and no light was coming from underneath it. A normal person might have assumed he was sleeping or not there at all, but I grabbed the handle and turned it anyway without even knocking.

To my surprise, the door was unlocked. I pushed it open and walked in.

The room was dark, the curtains drawn so tight that almost no moonlight came through. It smelled stale, like closed windows and dirty sheets and too many days spent wallowing within the same four walls. I reached for the light switch just inside the door and flicked it on.

The overhead light glared to life.

My wolf surged forward so suddenly it nearly knocked the breath out of me. After spending months being quiet and distant, she was suddenly there, howling, yearning to rush forward into the arms of the man who sat in front of me.

I gripped the doorframe to keep myself from moving.

Dominic was sitting up against the headboard.

Alone.

He looked like he hadn’t slept properly in weeks. His hair was a mess, his jaw covered in more stubble than I’d ever seen on him, dark circles carved deep under his eyes. He was wearing an old t-shirt and sweatpants. He looked nothing like the man I remembered on our wedding day, looking as handsome as ever in a perfectly-tailored tuxedo and not a care in the world.

He stared at me now with wild, blinking eyes, like he wasn’t quite sure if he was hallucinating or not.

“Ellie,” he whispered. “You… You came back.”
