Ellie’s POV
It took the better part of an hour explain everything, sitting cross-legged on Lucas’s living room floor with a mug of tea gone cold between my hands while Sarah and Abigail occupied the couch and Lucas sat in the armchair with his arms folded, saying nothing.
I started with Ryan in front of the convenience store and ended with Dominic’s mother watching me walk out the front door, and by the time I was finished, the room was deadly quiet.
Sarah spoke first.
“So he actually did it,” she said. “He banished her.”
“That’s what he and his mother said.”
“And you believe them?”
I turned the mug around in my hands. “Dominic never held up any pretense, at least not in this life, of choosing me over Vivian until now. If he was lying, then he was doing a damn good job of it.”
Sarah sat back against the cushions and wrinkled her nose in thought. Abigail was quieter, watching me from her end of the couch with her knees pulled up to her chest.
“He apologized,” I added. “Properly. Didn’t try to use it to get anything out of me.”
“He sounds different,” Abigail said quietly.
Lucas scoffed from the armchair.
Sarah flicked her gaze to him. “You have something to say, Lucas?”
“I have plenty to say,” Lucas said. “I’m just deciding how much of it is worth saying.”
“All of it, presumably,” Sarah said.
He dropped his arms and leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees. “Ellie, he treated you like garbage,” he said, looking at me directly. “In this timeline and the last one. And now he’s had a hard few months and suddenly he’s a changed man and we’re all supposed to just accept that?”
“Nobody said anything about accepting anything,” I put in.
