The Luna Queen's Rebirth (Ellie and Dominic) novel Chapter 365

Chapter 365

I closed the door behind me and crossed the grass. He didn’t turn around, but I knew he knew I was there.

I stood beside him and looked up at the same patch of sky.

For a while, neither of us said anything

“You don’t have to pretend,” I said after a bit.

He was quiet for a moment. “I’m not pretending anything.”

“Lucas.”

He exhaled and dropped his chin, staring at the fence. “I just think you deserve better, that’s all.”

“I know you do.” I turned to look at him. “And I love you for it. I mean that.”

He turned his head and looked at me, and for a second I could see it, the thing he’d been carrying around for a while now, the thing that had probably been there longer than either of us had acknowledged out loud. It was written plainly across his face in the dark.

“It’s not going to happen,” I said gently. “You and me. I need you to understand that. Because you also deserve better than to be chasing someone who doesn’t see you that way.”

He looked away again, jaw ticking.

“I don’t want it to change things,” I added.

“It won’t.” He said it simply, without self-pity. He scuffed his shoe against the grass. “I just worry about you. That’s all it is, at the end of the day. I see you going back to that house and I think about everything you told me about what happened before, the first time around, and I-” He exhaled, letting out a small white cloud of air. “I don’t want that for you.”

“I’m not going back,” I said. “Not the way you mean.’
