Ellie’s POV
It had been a long, tiring day. Finals were in just a few short weeks, and the semester was wrapping up with a mountain of projects and assignments. Just when one ended, another one seemed to pop up, and I felt like I was drowning. I was coming down the academy steps with my bag over one shoulder, already thinking about dinner, when the sound of an all-too-familiar voice stopped me cold.
“Ellie.”
I turned slowly.
My stepfather was standing at the bottom of the steps with his hands in the pockets of his coat, looking up at me. He looked exactly the same as he always had. Same hard jaw, same cold eyes, same expression like he’d just bitten into something sour. Time had not softened him even slightly.
I hadn’t seen him since before the wedding.
“What are you doing here?” I blurted out.
“Is that any way to greet your father?”
I folded my arms. “You’re not my father. You’ve made that clear many times. What do you want?”
“I was looking for you,” he huffed. “I went to Dominic’s pack first. They told me you hadn’t lived there in months.” He said it like it was an accusation. “I had to do detective work just to find you.”
I came down the last few steps and stopped a comfortable distance away from him. “Well. You found me. What do you want?”
He looked me over, taking in the ink marks on my fingers. His brows lifted. “You’re studying again?”
“I never stopped.”
He made a sound that wasn’t very approving, then said, “You should be at home. With your husband.”
“We’re divorced,” I said.
The temperature between us dropped about ten degrees.
“What did you say?”
“Dominic and I are divorced,” I said, adjusting my bag on my shoulder. “Have been for a couple of
months now.”
