That night, I couldn’t stop thinking about that strange tablet. Around midnight, I finally couldn’t take it anymore, so I got up and turned on my overhead light, squinting, and carefully laid the tablet out on my desk.

The picture I snapped probably wasn’t the best quality, a little blurry and low-resolution, but I attached it to an email addressed to Edmund at the Lycan Historical Museum and typed out a message before I could think twice.

“Edmund,” I wrote. “I’m not sure if you remember me, but this is Ellie-I visited a while back. I found this in my mother’s belongings. Does it seem to be of Lycan origin to you?”

I hit send, shut off the light, and by the time my head hit the pillow, I was already half-asteep.

When I woke in the morning, there were two emails from Edmund waiting in my inbox. The first was short and a little concerning: “This was in your mother’s belongings? Call me as soon as you can.

Then: “Actually, can you meet today?” At the bottom of that second message was an address for a diner halfway between here and the museum, with a note that read, “They have excellent pancakes.”

Intrigued, I typed out a quick response to Edmund telling him I would meet him at the diner, which was two hours away. Before 1 knew it, I was dressed in my usual jeans and a sweater with the tablet tucked into my purse and heading out the door.

Edmund was already there when I arrived. He was in a booth near the back, a cup of coffee in front of him and his reading glasses already on. He stood up when he saw me come through the door and grinned.

“Let me see it,” he said by way of greeting.
