Ellie’s POV
“Goddess,” I muttered, leaning back and wiping my brow. It was frigid outside-Lucas was right, it had snowed a dusting yesterday, and it was still cold even though the snow had melted by now-but I had already managed to work up a sweat sitting in my room from all the packing, organizing, and cleaning I had been doing all morning.” How did I accumulate so much junk?”
Abigail, sitting on the bed with her legs crossed and a box of sweaters in front of her, shrugged. “It happens.” She held up a pink sweater. “Are you taking this one, or can I have it?”
I looked up and shook my head. “You can keep it. I have too many already, and I need to pack light.”
Abigail grinned and tossed it onto the steadily growing pile of things to be adding to her own wardrobe down the hall.
“I wish you could come with me,” I muttered as I dug into the box in front of me again, pulling out another trinket that I didn’t remember buying.
Her face softened. “So do I. But I’ve got this new job, and…” She shrugged. “I feel like we’re both starting over in our own ways, and that’s a good thing. Moving on from what we went through before.”
I nodded, knowing she was right.
I tossed the trinket into a donation pile and reached into the box again. My fingers closed around something small and foreign. I pulled it out, frowning. It was a watch that I immediately recognized as belonging to Dominic. He used to wear it all the time; it was one of his favorites. And one of his most expensive ones.
“Huh,” I muttered. I had no memory of packing it, but it must have gotten mixed up in my things jduring the move. I supposed I had been pretty hasty in packing when I left Dominic’s pack, pretty much just shoving stuff into boxes and bags and whatever it would fit in.
I set it on the dresser, making a mental note to drop it off for him later, and went back to packing.
Around lunchtime, my back hurt from hunching over suitcases all day and I decided I needed a break. I took the watch, threw on my jacket, and headed to Dominic’s pack to give it to him.
At least, I told myself it was just to give him his watch. My wolf insisted otherwise, but I ignored her.
Dominic’s Beta looked surprised to see me on the doorstep when I knocked, but he opened the door wide enough to let me in. I stepped inside, shivering from the cold.
“Is Dominic around?” I asked, holding up the watch. “I have something of his.”
“He’s in a meeting.” Shutting the door, he glanced over his shoulder toward Dominic’s study down the hall, then at me and smiled politely. “Give me a second.”
While he went off to check, I waited in the foyer with my hands in my pockets, thumbing the back of the watch. I could feel Dominic’s initials engraved into the matte metal.
The Beta reappeared a moment later. “He says you can come in.”
I followed the Beta to the study down the hall. The door was half-open when I reached it, two voices audible from inside; one was Dominic’s familiar cadence, but I didn’t recognize the other. They were slightly raised, like they were arguing.

“…Too far,” I heard Dominic say. “I’m needed here…”
“But if you want to become Alpha King, you’ll need to step away for things like this…”
I hesitated, looking back over my shoulder uncertainly, but the Beta was already gone. I knocked once and pushed it open the rest of the way.
Dominic was behind the desk. Across from him sat a man I’d never seen before with wire-rimmed glasses and a notebook sitting open in his lap. He had a no-nonsense look about him, and his face was a little red like he was holding something back. Either a coughing fit or a shout, I wasn’t quite sure.
I stopped in the doorway and cleared my throat. Both of them stopped talking immediately and looked up at me.
The man I didn’t know pushed his glasses up on his nose, studying me for a moment like he was trying to place his finger on who I was. Then, as if coming to a conclusion, he visibly calmed himself and stood and walked over
to me.
“You must be Alpha Dominic’s Luna,” he said, extending his hand with a professional smile.
