Ellie’s POV
Dominic’s offer hung in the air between us for a long moment, and I couldn’t seem to come up with a good enough response.
For all intents and purposes, it was a simple enough offer. It was mutually beneficial enough to make sense. It was a long drive, nearly a full day’s journey by car, so going together would save on gas and allow us to take turns driving.
But underneath all the practicality was the true crux of the matter.
Sixteen hours alone with Dominic. Sitting confined in a car. Likely just the two of us and a shared history that time and proximity and two lonely wolves would push us to talk about.
After everything that had happened between us, I wasn’t sure if that was the best idea. Not right now. Maybe not
ever.
“I’ll need my car,” I pointed out. “I can’t leave it behind.”
Dominic nodded, then gestured to Andrew. “We were planning on going with a small retinue of warriors, so we’re bringing a van. Someone can haul your car behind it. Or you can drive your own car. But you can join the caravan if you want either way.”
I hesitated, chewing on the inside of my cheek. It made sense. Too much sense to turn it down. Lucas would probably have something to say about it, but… Well, even he couldn’t deny the practicality in it. And it would be safer than traveling alone. Rogues were known to scavenge the roadways up there, and a single woman in a small car would be a prime target. At least this way, I could stop to use the bathroom or stretch my legs without feeling like there was a bullseye on my back.
Andrew cleared his throat for the second time. I got the impression that it was a frequent habit of his.
“Fine,” I said. “Sure. I’ll take the ride if you can haul my car.”
Dominic nodded, lips twitching like he was trying not to smile. “Perfect. I’ll sort out the timing and let you know.”
“Okay.” I turned to leave. “I’ll leave you to it, then. It was nice meeting you, Andrew.”
Andrew was already flipping back through his folders before I’d finished the sentence. I pulled the study door shut behind me and started back down the hall.
I was almost to the front door when I heard footsteps behind me.
“Ellie.”
