“I’d love that,” I said. If there were descendents of Lycans in Goldenveil, then this was perfect. It felt like kisme, being assigned to a place that might hold the answers to the tablet my mom had and the strange abilities I possessed. Maybe I even had family there that I never knew about. Assuming I was a descendent myself, that is,
Dominic smiled. “If you come to the Alpha meeting with me, I could introduce you to him. I’m sure you’ll meet him anyway, but it wouldn’t hurt, right?”
He was right. It wouldn’t hurt.
But then the hammer fell.
“You could attend the meeting as my partner for a day.”
My jaw ticked. “As your Luna, you mean.”
“Just for the day,” he clarified again. “If you want to-”
“I feel like I should be clear about this,” I cut him off before he could finish. “I’m going to Goldenveil as a healer. That’s why Hanna placed me, and that hasn’t changed just because we’re riding up together.”
“I know,” he said.
“I’m not sitting next to you at a council table pretending I’m someone I’m not anymore. I’m not going to play the part of your Luna. Not even for a day.”
His expression fell a little, but he nodded. “Of course. That’s not what I meant. I just thought we could go to the meeting together.”
Thesitated, considering his words.
“I just think we can be useful to each other,” Dominic said. “You want answers. I want to make a decent impression on a council I haven’t been particularly reliable with lately.” He lifted one shoulder. “It’s a practical arrangement.”
I’d used that exact phrasing myself, a few weeks ago, standing in his doorway with a grocery bag in my hand. I didn’t mention that.
He wasn’t wrong, though, and that was the problem. He wasn’t wrong, and my wolf was purring at the idea, and I had spent the better part of this lifetime trying and mostly failing to piece together clues about Lycans that seemed to keep falling in front of me every step of the way.
If Alpha Terence knew anything about Lycans, then this was my chance to get close with him. As a healer, I might see him here and there, but not much. Not enough to facilitate a deeper conversation. Assuming he was like every other Alpha, he’d be too busy to bother spending one-on-one time with the lower-ranking traveling healer who was only supposed to be working in a clinic somewhere in the pack for a few months.
But if I had an Alpha by my side who could help nudge things along…
It wasn’t the worst idea.
“Okay,” I said. “I’ll go with you. But only if you promise to introduce us. And I’m not going to pretend to be your Luna for a day. Just your friend.”
