Ellie’s POV

The woman handed us our room key and smiled apologetically. I didn’t argue, because I was too tired to care at this point, as Dominic took it and we headed upstairs.

The suite was at the end of the hall on the second floor. It was one large room with a king-sized bed in the middle of the space and a little sitting area near the window: a couch, two dining chairs and a small table to eat at. Other than that, there was a small TV hanging on the wall and not much else. It was cozy, but sparsely furnished. Everything smelled like new wood and fresh paint.

“They must have built this place recently,” Dominic said, dropping his bag on one of the dining chairs. “Still smells like sawdust.”

I nodded, walking over to the window. Through the window the lanterns on the bridges were still visible, brighter now that it had gotten even darker since our arrival. The mountains, for their part, were now nothing but dark shapes against the sky.

“I’ll take the floor,” Dominic said suddenly from behind me.

“Are you sure?” I asked, turning to him.

He nodded. “It’s just one night.”

“But you’re the one who paid for the room.”

“Quit arguing and go shower,” Dominic said, plopping down on the end of the bed. “We both stink.”

“Fair,” I chuckled, making my way into the bathroom. I was a little surprised that he hadn’t immediately suggested cozying up in bed together for the night, but I didn’t comment on it. Besides, I was starting to learn to stop being quite so surprised when Dominic was nice to me. It was still strange, but welcome.

The bathroom was hardly bigger than a closet, with a walk-in shower that had a handheld shower head, but it was fully stocked with soap and that was about all I could have asked for right now. I turned the water on as hot as it would go and walked over to the tiny window while I waited for it to heat up.

The village was beautiful, even in the dark. The lights were golden and warm despite the cold frost against the window, and the mountains reached into the deep blue sky like fingers reaching toward the heavens. The sky was deep and clear, the stars fully visible like a tapestry of small and large punctures in space letting in light from another world.
