The Luna Queen's Rebirth (Ellie and Dominic) novel Chapter 385

“Hey.” Dominic set the remote down, popping a piece of steak into his mouth, and gestured to the TV with his fork. “We used to watch this when we were kids. Do you remember?”

My face warmed as I turned to look at the screen. The characters were standing on a typical sitcom set, the laugh track playing as one of them, the comedic relief character, gesticulated wildly over what looked like a burnt pot roast sitting on the table between them.

“Of course I remember,” I said. “We used to pile into my parents’ basement on Friday nights with way too much popcorn so we could watch it.”

“Every week like clockwork.” Dominic smiled. “It looks so old now. Time flies, huh?” He chewed, swallowed, then took a sip of his tea. “It feels like yesterday.”

I snorted. “Feels like forever for me,” I said, but didn’t bother explaining why-how two timelines made everything feel stretched out into an eternity. And Dominic, too busy digging into his meal, didn’t ask.

After that, we ate without talking much. The food was delicious, buttery and rich, and the show was comfortable and outside the window the village was settling down, the lanterns still burning on the bridges.

Eventually, Dominic went to the bathroom to take a shower. I settled on the bed, leaning against the headboard and kept watching the show as one episode faded into another. Shortly after the opening credits rolled, my eyes started feeling heavy, and before Dominic emerged from the bathroom, I was drifting off.

At some point in the morning, I woke to the sound of a bird chirping loudly somewhere outside the window. My eyes opened, and for a second, I startled at the sight of the unfamiliar lighting fixture overhead, forgetting that I wasn’t in my bed at Lucas’s house anymore.

A moment later, yesterday came drifting back, and I remembered where I was. I laid there for a bit, staring up at the ceiling that wasn’t my own.

The sound of something strange made me lift my head. Something like teeth chattering, followed by Dominic shifting on the floor with a groan.

I rolled over to the edge of the bed and peered over, finding that Dominic had stayed true to his word; he’d slept on the floor next to the bed with only a pillow under his head, a thin blanket cushioning him against the hardwood, and another, thinner blanket covering him.

It wasn’t enough, clearly. The room had gone cold overnight, and he was shivering under his blanket.
