“You must be Ellie,” she said, walking around the counter to shake my hand with both of hers. “Edmund told me you might stop by. How’s the cold treating you?”
“Much better now that I have a proper coat,” I laughed.
I began working my way around the small room, reading the various plaques about the ruins nearby.
The city had been called Aurelie. Before the werewolves wiped out the Lycan population several hundred years ago, it had been one of the largest Lycan settlements in the known territories. It was a highly profitable mining city, making most of its money from the rich opal deposits within the mountains.
Unfortunately, the war hit the southern territories first, wiping out all of the Lycans in those regions. Aurelie was the final city to be taken by the werewolves, but due to the advantageous location of the city, some Lycans managed to escape.
Most of them assimilated into local packs. They intermarried to hide their bloodlines, keeping a low profile for a few generations until they were indistinguishable from werewolves.
The woman stopped beside me in front of a framed family tree spread across three joined pieces of parchment. I looked at her. “How many people in Goldenveil contain Lycan ancestry?”
“Oh, not too many now,” she said. “If we do, the documentation of it has been lost to time. It’s really only the Alpha’s family that still contains records of their bloodline. They bred carefully over the centuries-still diluted, but not as much as others.”
I looked at the names on the family tree. Many were unrecognizable, but I noticed one that stood out: Terence, Alpha of Goldenveil.
“Oh, by the way, we do tours of the ruins,” the woman said, moving over to the desk and picking up a small pamphlet, which she handed to me. “The next one is tomorrow at eight in the morning. Would you like to come?”
I took the pamphlet, studying it. It showed a few photographs and some blurbs about the ruins. I tucked the pamphlet into my shopping bag and nodded. The woman handed me a pen and had me sign my name on a list. My name was the only name on it.
“We’re still working on getting more visitors,” she said with a smile as she put the list away.
“Well, I’m happy to support the endeavor however I can,” I replied. The clock on the wall behind the counter read ten-thirty. The meeting was starting in an hour, so I needed to beat feet back to the hotel. “Thank you for everything.” I turned to leave.
“Wait! Forgive me for asking,” she called after me, “but are you any relation to Alpha Terence?”
I stopped and looked at her. “I’ve never met him.”
