Ellie’s POV

All the dresses I packed felt too breezy for this weather, so I threw on a pantsuit that I’d packed specifically for today. I paired it with a pair of low pumps, brushed out my hair and threw on some mascara, then grabbed my new coat and met Domitric in the lobby before the thirty minutes was up.

The woman behind the desk was giggling at something Dominic said when I entered. They both looked up, and she grinned.

“There you go,” she said. “You look like a Goldenveil girl already.”

“I feel like I still stick out like a sore thumb,” I said, looking down at myself.

“No. You look great.” Dominic’s eyes flicked over me. “The coat suits you. It goes well with your hair.”

“Really?” I touched my hair, and the concierge chuckled, sipping another cup of coffee that was equally as steaming as the one that morning. I began to realize that she probably hadn’t slept after all because she was a caffeine addict. But that was fair, because so was I.

Dominic offered me his elbow, and I took it, letting him lead me out into the cold.

The community center sat on the far side of the main square, a wide stone building with the Alpha Council banner hanging above the entrance and two pack warriors in dark uniforms with luxurious fur capelets standing at the door checking names off a clipboard. The paths through the village were busier than they’d been that morning, a few pack members gathered near the bridges watching the arriving Alphas pass through.

Dominic gave his name to the warriors, and they waved us through.

Inside, the room was warm and already well-populated by Alphas, Betas, Lunas, and their guests. Round were scattered tables across the main floor, name cards at each seat, and refreshments were being served at a buffet table along the far wall.

A few people looked at Dominic when we walked in. Predictable. A few of them looked at me too.

Dominic’s Beta walked over, whispering something in his ear. Dominic nodded, pulling his arm away, and touched my elbow.
