Ellie’s POV
I must have sat there in that room for the better part of fifteen minutes, just staring at the spot where my father had just been.
My father.
In all my life, as long as I could remember, I had never even dreamed of calling anyone that. Certainly not my stepfather, and not anyone else, for that matter. The entire concept of having a father was so foreign to me tha it never even occurred to me that I could be missing something like that from my life.
Until now.
With my mother-or at least, the woman who I thought was my mother-gone, there was no one left in my family who could affect me in that way. Not Vivian. Not my stepfather, who I rarely saw these days anyway. No one.
But now, this man of Lycan descent from a foreign pack I had never even heard of until recently, was someone I could call my father.
I still didn’t know how to feel about it. It felt like a dream at best and a lie at worst. I kept glancing around like I might find a hidden camera, or laughing faces in the window, mocking me for ever thinking, for so much as a moment, that there could be anyone left in my family and anyone especially who wanted me.
But there was no one. Just me, sitting in that room, staring at my surroundings with new eyes.
I needed air.
Standing on shaky legs, I pushed out of the room and walked back out into the main area. The crowd had wound down a little, most of the Alphas, Lunas, and Betas having disappeared into the meeting room. I could hear the low murmur of voices from behind the heavy wooden doors.
I walked out of the building and into the biting cold air outside, which was unexpectedly soothing against my hot face. There, I shoved my hands into my pockets and began to walk. I wasn’t sure where I was going; I just knew I needed to move, so I did.
