I leaned on the railing and exhaled a puff of white out into the air, looking around the quaint village, up at the haphazard little houses climbing the side of the mountain. Up above, I looked at the ruins, now on full display in the afternoon sun, tall pillars half-eaten by time and crumbling stones that were once walls.
They were all pale now, the color washed away by generations of snow and ice and wind and the hot sun of summer. It was impossible to imagine the thriving city that once existed here before the werewolves wiped all of the Lycans out.
It was even more impossible to imagine my ancestors living here.
Shaking my head, I turned away from the view, leaning back against the railing. On the second bridge across the way, I spotted another figure bundled in a dark fur coat, leaning over the railing and looking directly at me.
I froze.
Their face looked… eerily like Vivian’s. Which was impossible, of course, seeing as how she’d been exiled hundreds upon hundreds of miles from here.
And yet…
Before I got a chance to get a better look, the person calmly turned and walked away without looking back. I shook my head as I watched them go, reminding myself that Vivian couldn’t possibly be here, and the stress of everything I’d just learned was playing tricks on me.
I decided now was as good a time as any to head back, so I walked back to the meeting house, taking my time as I went. By the time I had returned, my cheeks rosy and my eyelashes dusted with ice, the meeting had let out.
I stopped in the doorway, looking around. I didn’t see Alpha Terence, but I did spot Dominic standing off to the side, talking to another Alpha.
He waved me over. I took a breath and walked over, pushing my hood back.
“Ellie.” Dominic turned to me, the other Alpha walking away as I approached. “How did it…”
“He’s my father,” I blurted out.
Dominic blinked. “What?”
I took a breath and told him everything. I wasn’t sure why. Maybe because I just felt like I needed to tell someone, and I didn’t know anyone else here except for Dominic, and I wasn’t about to walk back to the hotel to tell the concierge about my findings.
When I was finished, Dominic’s face was paler than before, although he didn’t look as surprised as I expected. Perhaps he suspected it before I did.
