Terence led us down the long hallway leading to the left, then through a wooden door that led to a spacious study. The walls were lined with bookshelves, most of which were packed with all kinds of books, although one had been covered with glass and contained various artifacts that struck me as Lycan origin immediately.

I stepped up to the case, peering at the artifacts within. They didn’t look as old as the one my mom had, or the ones in Edwin’s museum. These ones looked newer: a silver bracelet set with a large opal. A delicate hair comb Several arrowheads, all lined up neatly from small to large.

“These belong to our pack,” Terence said, coming to stand beside me. “The hair comb and bracelet belonged to my mother-your grandmother. Your mother made those arrowheads herself.”

I leaned closer, inspecting the bracelet with the opal. My own eyes shone back at me from the glass.

“Is it true?” I asked, glancing at my father. “That Lycans had opal eyes because of the opal deposits?”

He smiled warmly. “It’s just a legend. My grandmother used to tell me stories about the ancient aristocrats eating opal dust in their diets, which gave them the colored eyes. Personally, I think it’s just a coincidence.”

I leaned back, turning to him. “What was your grandmother like?”

“She was a stern woman,” Terence said, gesturing for me to sit. Dominic was standing by the fireplace, watching the flames. I perched on the edge of one of the armchairs and folded my hands in my lap. “No-nonsense, but kind. She was very practical without being cruel, and always put her pack first. I admired that about her. Still do.”

Terence went on to tell me about his mother, his father, and his siblings. Apparently, I had two aunts and one uncle, all of whom unfortunately passed away during infancy due to an illness that swept the pack. My father was the only one who survived, and eventually took over the pack when he came of age and his father could no longer run things on his own.

The pack was mostly nomadic, he said. They lived in the surrounding mountains, transitioning from their summer location deeper in the valley where they could grow more food, then further south for the winter, where it was a little warmer.

It wasn’t until recently that they moved further up into the mountains, back toward the old ruins. Excavation of the ruins allowed them to uncover more about their past, and the mountain kept them safe from bands of rogues. After the raid that killed my mother and separated me from my father, avoiding rogues was always the priority.

He told me, too, about the Seekers. Ancient healers and academics who devoted their lives to locating and cultivating rare and magical plants, like the ones I had found.

According to a book my father pulled off the shelf, a hand-written account from someone in our family who once had the Seeker trait, the plants I found may have been planted generations ago, before the Lycans scattered.

It was hard to wrap my head around, that the luck I’d experienced three times-more than luck, I supposed now- had been the whisper of ancestors long gone. At the time, I thought it was pure coincidence, perhaps an affinity for plants, nothing more. But now, hearing stories about my ancestors, I looked at the whole thing in a new light.

“Keep it,” my father said, handing me the old, worn, leatherbound journal that had belonged to my great-great- grandmother, the last Seeker in our line. “Perhaps you’ll learn more about your ability with it.”

“It still feels more like sheer luck than an ‘ability’,” I laughed.

Dominic, who had been quietly listening, suddenly spoke up. “Don’t sell yourself short, Ellie. What you did with

those plants saved your life twice. And my sinuses once.”

I flushed.

“While we’re on the subject,” my father asked, “have you exhibited any other abilities? Perhaps anything worth noting?”

I opened my mouth, then shut if again. The rebirth was, of course, the first thing that came to mind. I kept thinking back to that princess I’d learned about, who was reborn in a very similar way to myself. But I didn’t want to get into it right now. Not with Dominic around.

“No,” I said as I slipped the book into my bag. “Nothing at all.”

I looked up, and Dominic was staring at me with an arched brow. He said nothing, but the way he was looking at me made me a little uneasy, like he sensed I was about to say more but had held myself back.

“Well,” my father said, either not noticing the exchange or choosing to ignore it, “I hope you find more answers from that book.” He gestured around us. “Or anything in my libr
