Chapter 402

Ellie’s POV

The words hung in the air between us, and I immediately wished I could snatch them back. 1

I don’t want you to leave.

Like I was some kind of lovesick teenager, begging him to stay even though our divorce papers had still barely cooled off the printing press.

Dominic froze near the door. The wind rattled the front window. Somewhere behind me, the radiator clicked on, making me jump.

“What did you just say?” he asked. His eyes glimmered.

“Nothing.” I grabbed the feather duster off the counter and turned away, dusting a shelf I’d already dusted twice that afternoon. “Forget it.”

“Ellie.” The floorboards creaked as he stepped closer. “You said you don’t want me to leave, didn’t you?”

“I said it because it’s a long drive,” I said. “Sixteen hours. The roads are bad, and it’s dangerous. That’s all.”

“That’s not what you meant,” he said slowly.

“It is, actually.”

I kept my back to him, working the duster over a row of glass jars that didn’t have a speck of dust on them. My face was burning. I could feel his eyes on me the entire time, burning into the back of my neck. He knew I was full of shit. He knew what I’d meant. We both did.

“Ellie.” He paused, and I heard him take a breath. “Are you still in love with me?”

I whirled around. “No!”

The word came out too fast and too loud. Dominic blinked.

“No,” I said again, softer this time, gripping the duster with white knuckles. “That’s not what this is. It’s the mate bond, that’s all. My wolf gets worked up when you’re around and it makes me say stupid things. It doesn’t mean anything.”

“Liar,” my wolf purred.

“You be quiet!”

Dominic didn’t look convinced. His eyes glimmered again, a small smile tugging at his lips as he saw right through me.

Huffing, I turned away again and busied myself behind the front desk, straightening a stack of papers and lining up the pens next. My cheeks were so hot I was sure they could heat the whole clinic.

For a long moment, neither of us spoke. The wind howled against the windows. I straightened the pens a second time.

“Ellie, what’s going on with you?”

I looked up. Dominic had moved to stand across the desk from me, his hands in his pockets, snow still melting in his dark hair. His face was serious now, all the lightness from earlier gone.

“What do you mean?” I asked.

“I mean… all of it.” He gestured vaguely, like he was trying to grab the right words out of the air. “I’ve been thinking about the circumstances of our divorce. On our wedding day, when you stabbed me-” We both winced at the memory- “you said it was because of trauma you’d endured. And I believed you. I still believe you, And I know what I did during our marriage. I know how I treated you, how I let Vivian treat you. I’m not asking because I think I was blameless, but I also know there’s more to it than you’re letting on.”

I swallowed.

“All throughout our marriage,” he said, “it was like there was something you wanted to say but couldn’t say it Then yesterday, at your father’s house, he asked if you had any other abilities, and you said no, but you were going to say something. I saw it.”

He was pacing now, gesturing as he spoke. “And then today, at the ruins. The reborn princess. You lit up like a lightbulb the second the guide mentioned her. You asked your father if rebirth was an ability in your family.”
