Ellie’s POV
“Reborn.”
Dominic repeated the word slowly, like he was tasting it on the tip of his tongue. I saw his lips tug upwards as if he thought I was teasing him or joking.
I wasn’t. I held his gaze, keeping mine firm and steady, and slowly, his smile faded.
“Like… the Lycan princess?” he asked, tilting his head. I couldn’t tell if he believed it. I couldn’t tell much of anything right now.
I nodded slowly. Just once.
“Go on,” he said quietly.
So I did.
“In my past life, we got married,” I began. “Just like this one. Fated mates, an Alpha and his Luna. Except in that life, you never wanted me. You never said it outright, but you didn’t have to. You treated me like a necessity. A box to check off. The Moon Goddess gave you a mate, so you married her, and that was the end of your obligation as far as you were concerned.”
Dominic’s jaw tightened, but he didn’t interrupt.
“You never touched me. Never ate with me. We slept in separate rooms for two years. The only times I ever saw you were at pack functions, where you would stand beside me and not look at me once.” I picked at a loose thread on my sleeve as I spoke, because I needed something to do with my hands, otherwise I might start to shake.
“And the whole time,” I went on, “Vivian was there. She took my place in subtle ways at first, but it got bigger over time, more important. Soon, I was little more than a figurehead while she took on the real job of your Luna.”
I exhaled shakily. Dominic didn’t move in his seat, just kept staring at me.
“Then came your Alpha Ceremony,” I went on. “There was an assassin in the crowd. I saw the knife before anyone else did. I didn’t even think about it. I just moved.” My hand drifted toward my chest on its own, right below my shoulder, where there was no scar in this life. “It went in right here. It was meant for you.” 1
Dominic stared at the spot.
“I survived, at first. The healers patched me up, and for a few days, I actually got better. And you came to see me.” I laughed a little, but it came out bitter. “Two years of marriage, and that was the first time you ever sat at my bedside.”
Silence.
“But my condition worsened fast,” I said. “Overnight, almost. My veins turned dark, I couldn’t keep anything down, my wound reopened and wouldn’t close.” I met his eyes. “I’m a healer, Dominic. I know those symptoms better than anyone now. Wolfsbane toxin.”
“So the assassin poisoned you,” Dominic said, furrowing his brow. “Or rather, he was supposed to poison me.”
I shook my head. “I stopped the same assassin at the festival, which was why I disappeared that day. I went to his home pack and questioned him. He hadn’t poisoned the blade. Which meant that someone else poisoned me right when I was starting to get better.”

Dominic’s face had drained of color.
“The night I died, Vivian came to my room.” My voice wobbled, and I hated it. “She was wearing my crown. The Luna’s crown. She stood over my bed and smiled at me while I choked. She wanted me to see her wearing it. She wanted it to be the last thing I ever saw.” I swallowed hard. “And it was.”
Outside, the lanterns flickered on as the sun began its descent, turning the snow pink and orange.
“And then I woke up,” I said. “In my childhood bedroom. Two years younger. Two years before any of it happened The ceremony, the knife, the poison, all of it was undone. Except I remembered everything.” I tapped my temple. “Every cold look. Every night alone. The exact way it feels to die with wolfsbane in your blood, in case you’re wondering. It burns.”
Dominic flinched like I had struck him.
