Ellie’s POV
+15 Bahus
Somewhere between my fortieth and fiftieth laps of the clinic, I had come to the conclusion that Dominic wasn’t coming back. I had said too much and scared him away. He didn’t believe me. He thought I was insane and he was running off to tell my father to lock me up.
At least, those were the words that kept swirling around my head.
But then he came back in in a rush of cold air, standing in the doorway with his chest heaving.
I whirled around, gasping at the sight of him standing there, his eyes wide, his cheeks flushed.
“Dominic,” I barely had time to breathe before he was crossing the room, closing the distance between us, and wasn’t even trying to put the space back at all. I just stood there, staring, as his arms encircled my waist and pulled me close and he buried his face in my neck.
I went rigid. My hands hovered midair at either side for a moment before they found the lapels of his jacket and held on. He was freezing, his suit jacket soaked through at the shoulders, and he was shaking. I didn’t think all of it was from the cold.
“I believe you,” he said into my hair. “Every word. I walked half this town looking for the hole in your story, the crack that would prove it couldn’t be real, and there isn’t one. The wedding day. The festival. The morning you woke up and became someone else entirely. I spent a year wondering what happened to you that morning, Ellie. Now I know.”
I pulled back just enough to look at his face. It was flushed from the cold, his eyes still wide, but there was a determination in them that I couldn’t ignore. He believed me, he really did. He wasn’t trying to write me off like só many times before over different things.
It warmed my chest more than I wanted it to. More than I felt either of us deserved right now.
“You’re going to catch your death out there in that jacket,” was all I managed, pulling him deeper into the clinic so the door fell shut behind him, blocking out the cold.
He huffed a laugh. “Probably.” Then the humor drained out of him. “I asked myself the worst question tonight. Whether I could have done it. Whether the man I used to be could have ordered it.”
His throat bobbed.
“I was capable of plenty back then. Indifference. Neglect. Letting Vivian run circles around the both of us because it was easier than paying attention. But hurting you?” His grip on my shoulders tightened. “Never. Not in that life, not in this one. Please, Ellie, you have to believe me.”
