That was what woke up in her childhood bedroom. Not the meek little shadow who used to follow my every move, but someone who had been forged in a life where I helped break her.
But there was one thing I couldn’t stop thinking about.
Could I have done it?
I made myself ask the question honestly, because she deserved that much. I had been capable of indifference. Of neglect. Of letting Vivian poison our marriage while I looked the other way because it was easier. If a man could do all that in two lifetimes, what else could he do?
But ordering my mate’s death?
The wolf snarled at the thought, hackles rising just at the notion. Even at my coldest, even when I only saw Ellie as an adorable nuisance, the idea of hurting her had never once crossed my mind.
I was not her killer. I refused to believe it.
Which meant someone else was.
Someone with access to a recovering Luna’s sickroom. Someone crazy enough to hire an assassin, then even crazier by poisoning her with Wolfsbane Toxin. Someone who wanted her not just dead, but humiliated. Someone who walked into that room wearing a stolen crown, just to watch and laugh!
I stopped walking.
Vivian.
It had always been her, hadn’t it? In this life, without a corpse to step over, she had settled for sabotage instead. The lies. The schemes. The slow, smiling campaign to take everything that was Ellie’s.
I had thought exile was the end of it. Justice served, the book closed, the poison cut out of the pack for good. But that was before. And now I knew so much more.
Now, I knew that Ellie’s killed might have been standing right in front of me, and I had let her walk away when she belonged in a prison cell.
If I had known, if Ellie had trusted me with this even one day before the exile, I could have dragged the truth out of Vivian myself. There were a million questions I wanted to ask now, but there was no way to know where she was or how to find her.
I scrubbed a hand down my face and leaned back against a stone wall, exhaling a white cloud
