Chapter 414
Vivian’s POV
I watched Ellie go, my jaw so tight my teeth hurt.
Typical.
Months had passed since we’d last seen each other, and nothing had changed. I’d offered her a deal that could have saved us both a lot of trouble, but Ellie had always preferred the hard way, even when the easy way was sitting right in front of her with a bow on it.
But then again, I wasn’t really planning on taking the easy route, either. I supposed that was one thing we had in
common.
It had taken me months to build what I had here. Months of playing the grateful orphan, of calling two strangers Mother and Father, of letting the Beta’s wife weep into my hair because I had the gall to resemble the daughter she’d put in the ground.
I’d eaten their food and worn the dead girl’s sweaters and smiled at every soul in this Goddess-forsaken village until my face ached. I had a roof over my head now. A name. A future that didn’t involve sleeping in tree lines and stealing from packs that would gut me if they caught me at it.
But Dominic still wasn’t mine. Ellie knew that I was only biding my time here until I could figure out a way to make my dreams come true, and she was going to tell Terence everything, ruin all of the careful work I had done.
So I needed to get to her first.
I went looking for Stephanie.
I found her sooner than I meant to. The door at the end of the corridor was still open a crack, and Terence’s voice was coming through the gap.
I stopped where I was and listened.
“–because she is my daughter,” Terence was saying. “I won’t keep apologizing for it.
“You’ll apologize when you’ve thrown away everything we built.” Stephanie’s voice could have stripped paint. Eighteen years I gave this pack, and you hand it to a stranger in one night because she happens to have your eyes.”
“It’s done, Stephanie.”
“Nothing is done until I say it is.”
There was a long silence, then the scrape of a chair and the thud of Terence’s cane on the floorboards. I stepped back into a nearby alcove just as the door swung open and Terence came out, jaw set, looking at nothing. He passed close enough to touch and never saw me.
I waited until his footsteps faded away, and then I slipped inside and pulled the door shut behind me.
