Chapter 418

“What do you want?” I snapped.

Vivian pulled her head back. Then lifted her wrapped hand. “You are a healer, aren’t you? Or are you going to turn me away?”

I sighed, knowing that she was right. Despite our past, it wouldn’t be right of me to turn away a clearly injured person. I’d made a vow when I graduated from the academy to help anyone in need regardless of pack status or background, and I wasn’t about to give Vivian, of all people, the satisfaction of breaking that vow.

I didn’t. I couldn’t. There was a sign on my door and an oath behind the work, and turning away someone bleeding wasn’t a thing I got to do, no matter whose blood it was.

“Sit down,” I said curtly, gesturing to the exam table.

She crossed the room and sat, unwinding the cloth from her hand. “My knife slipped while I was cleaning a rabbit I hunted,” she said. “I’d have wrapped it myself, but the Beta’s wife heard me carrying on and wouldn’t hear of it.” A rueful little smile. “She frets.”

The cut ran across the meat of her palm, clean and deep enough to need stitches. I pulled on a pair of gloves and got out what I needed, but I didn’t say anything; just focused on working.

“You’re angry,” she said, watching me through her brows as I worked. “I understand that. I’m not asking you to pretend otherwise.” She watched me thread the needle. “I just want you to know I’m not looking for trouble. Whatever you think of me, the last few months have changed things. You don’t come back from sleeping in the cold with nothing and stay the same person you were before.”

She didn’t even flinch when I cleaned the cut with alcohol. And I wasn’t exactly gentle about it.

“The Beta and his wife took me in when they had no reason to,” she went on. “I have a bed now. People who care about me with no strings attached. I’m not going to throw that away to settle some old score. I want a fresh start. The same as you.”

“We’re nothing alike,” I said.

“Maybe not.” She shrugged. “But I’m leaving in a few days regardless. Pack business, down south. I’ll be gone for weeks.” Her eyes followed my hands as I worked the first stitch through. “So you won’t have to look at me. That’s what you wanted, isn’t it? I’ll stay out of your hair.” 1

I tied off the stitch and started the next one. Her promises had never been worth a damn to me. She was lying, and we both knew she was lying, and I wasn’t the same foolish little girl who would buy into it. Not anymore.

“Hold still,” was all I said.

When I had finished I wrapped her hand, I snapped off my gloves and stepped back. “Keep it clean. Don’t touch the stitches. You can go into any clinic while you’re away and they’ll take them out in a week.”

“Thank you, Ellie.” She stood, flexing her fingers, and smiled at me. “I mean it. I hope you find what you came up here for.”

I said nothing as she pulled her coat on and let herself out.
