Chapter 419
Ellie’s POV

Stephanie led me through to a sitting room off the front hall and gestured to an armchair by the fire. A tray was already set out on the coffee table between us. I sat, and she poured two cups of steaming tea.
“You look frozen,” Stephanie said, sliding a cup across to me. “Drink.”
I took the cup, thanking her quietly, although I waited for her to take a sip of hers before I drank mine. I supposed I had no real reason to assume the woman might try to poison me, but dying once already had my instincts of high alert, especially around someone who did probably have a good reason to get rid of me just in case she wanted to.
“So.” She leaned back in her chair, studying me over the rim of her cup. “You came to see Terence. About what, may I ask?”
“Just to talk,” I said. I didn’t know her well enough to tell her everything about Vivian. Even telling Terence, who I only knew for a couple of days longer than I’d known his wife, felt risky.
“Hmph.” She clearly didn’t buy my vagueness. “People don’t climb all the way up here, especially not in the snow, just to talk, in my experience. What do you really want?”
I blinked. That was… blunt. It might have been refreshing, had she not currently been looking at me like I was a villain trying to steal her sons’ birthright.
“I don’t want anything,” I said with a shrug. “I’m here on a contract. Six months, maybe a little more. When it’s up, I’ll likely move on to the next pack that needs a healer, same as I always have.”
“And Terence?” she asked.
“I’d like to get to know my father,” I replied.
Her eyes narrowed.
“You know, I almost believe you,” she said after a moment. “You don’t have the look.”
“The… look?”
She nodded. “The look of someone who wants everything.”
