The pack wasn’t happy about it, either. Callum hadn’t been in good health in a long time, and having a strong, capable Alpha with an equally strong and capable wolf was expected for the pack’s safety.
Because of this, rogue attacks had been more common over the years. Callum had done little about it other than delegating tasks to warriors and upping the border patrols. He hadn’t joined a fight since he was sixty, and he hadn’t shifted in even longer.
I got the sense, though, that this wasn’t out of cruelty on Callum’s part. He seemed like a nice man, kind yet practical. But proud.
On the afternoon of the second day, I took it upon myself to talk to Callum personally. I found him sitting under a tree, watching from afar as Monroe and his Beta surveyed the property. He looked out of breath and exhausted.
“Alpha Callum,” I said politely, gesturing to the bench he was sitting on. “May I?”
The old Alpha looked up at me. “Certainly.”
I took a seat beside him, watching the group move for a moment, before I said, “Can I ask you something?”
He nodded and waited.
I took a breath. “Forgive me if this comes across as rude. I’m just curious… do you plan on stepping down at any point?”

“No.” I laughed. “I’ve got plenty to deal with in my own pack, trust me. But I can’t help but overhear some conversations around your pack; I heard just this morning that a rogue attack decimated your southern
wall last week.”
“Aye.” he sighed, rubbing his hand over his face. “I tried to get out there and help, but my knees…”
“Right…” I kept my tone pleasant as I asked, “Alpha Callum, you were a warrior in your day, weren’t you?”
The Alpha nodded. “Indeed I was. I would have stayed one, too, had I not sustained multiple injuries in battle.”
“I’m sure you were quite the sight on the battlefield.”
The Alpha grinned and went on to describe the story of his life, a rather long-winded thing, but I listened to every word. He told me about his youth leading the pack warriors into many battles against an enormous band of rogues in the region, saving Ashford from near-destruction, sustaining injuries that rendered him infertile and incapable of producing an heir.
After we’d established a rapport, I told him about what I’d noticed of his Beta-young and capable and just as proud as he seemed. His nephew, according to Callum, had been ready to take charge of the pack
