Chapter 11

“We’re here,” Prince Kai says.

I take a deep breath, trying to steady my shaking hands, and step out of the car.

“Wow…..” my voice trails off.

The first thing I notice are the people. There are she–wolves and he–wolves everywhere across the grounds. They are gathered in groups, some talking and laughing, while others are sparring with each other in the distance. Some are running through the fields in

their wolf forms, and I can’t help but watch the huge creatures with fur in shades of grey, black, and deep brown. I’m just marveling

at everyone around me. I still can’t believe I’m actually standing here at the iconic Krypton Wolf Academy.

I’m so lost in thought that I jump when I suddenly feel a tap on my shoulder. Prince Kai is standing behind me, looking pretty

annoyed.

“Well, don’t just stand there all day,” he says. “Come on.”

He starts walking toward the main entrance, and I hurry to match his long strides. As we move forward, the vibe on the grounds shifts quickly. One by one, the students notice the Prince arriving. The chatting stops, the sparring ends, and everyone immediately

bows as he walks by.

But as soon as they see me following behind him in my messy, baggy clothes, their faces change. They start whispering and watching me like I’m some strange creature.

I keep my head down, feeling their judgmental eyes on me, and wondering if I’ll ever truly belong in a place like this.

As we walk into the Academy’s main building, every wolf around acknowledges Prince Kai’s presence. “Welcome back, Your Highness.” “We missed you, Prince Kai.”

Several girls bat their eyelashes at him unashamedly, their eyes filled with admiration. Others don’t even try to hide their hostility toward me. They glare at my appearance, probably wondering why I am walking beside their prince.

Prince Kai ignores everyone around him. He reaches out and takes my hand, his grip firm and warm as he pulls me along, making me keep up with him. When we step into the grand hallway of the academy, the air feels cooler, but I can still feel my face burning. I keep my eyes on the floor, feeling pretty self–conscious about my rough clothes.

That’s when I begin to hear their whispers and murmurs.

“Who is she?”

“Why is the Prince with her?”

Is she his new plaything?”

Chapter 11

I can’t help feeling ashamed about their nasty words. My heart starts to race, and my breathing comes out quick and shallow. It feel like the walls are closing in on me.

Prince Kai must have caught on that I was panicking because he stops walking and turns to face me, leaning his face down until we’re almost eye to eye. “Ignore everyone,” he says, his voice low and commanding. “Just focus on me, okay?”

His words have a strange effect on me. The noise of the crowd seems to fade away, and I feel a calm settle over me. Veatch myself staring back at him intensely. Up close, his green eyes are amazing–they look like a deep forest, swirling with dark spots and something that looks almost magical. For a moment, it’s like we’re the only two people in the whole hallway.

“Oh baby!”

The moment gets broken when a pretty girl suddenly rushes up and roughly pushes me aside like she didn’t see me, making me

stumble, and throws her arms around Kai’s neck.
