Chapter 117
I step back into my spot. Once everyone has a card, Poppy starts talking again.
“I will give you a little info about your test,” she says like she’s doing us a favor. “This will be a double test. Part one and part two For part one, everyone will have to change into their wolf forms. That is the only way you will have the chance to pass. If anyone tries to fight through as just a human, you will fail. You will also possibly lose your lives.”
The room explodes into murmurs.
“Lose our lives?” someone whispers behind me.
“Is she serious?” another girl asks.
“I thought this was just a test. No one said anything about dying!” Someone cries.
I swallow hard, feeling extremely terrified. I have to find a way to shift. I have to force Wyndra out of my skin and into the world. If I don’t, I’m dead.
“In the next part,” Poppy continues, “you will have to make a hard decision. Whatever decision you make depends on passing your first test. I wish you all good luck. Try not to exceed the time limit on your cards.”
She points to the glass doors at the side of the hall. They lead to the virtual reality chambers.
I start walking. My legs feel like they are made of jelly as I walk. When I reach the front of my door, I look over at Erika, Amara, and Isolde. They are all standing in front of their own doors. They look like they want to cry or run away. Honestly, me too. I lift my hand and give them a thumbs up. I try to look brave for them.
They give me a thumbs up back.
I open the glass door and step inside.
The temperature drops immediately. It feels like entering a cooler. It’s pitch black for a few seconds. I can’t see anything. Then, I feel the floor give out beneath me.
