Chapter 118
“Aaaaah!” I let out a scream as my whole body goes weightless in a second.

I’m free falling. I’m falling down into a dark void. I thrash my arms around, but there is nothing to grab. I keep falling for what seems like months, or years. My stomach is in my throat.
Finally, I hit a surface. I wince as I hit the ground hard, my leg slamming into a sharp rock.
“Ow! Shit!” I yell as pain shoots up my leg. It’s a sharp, burning feeling. Great. This test is already breaking my bones and I haven’t even started.
I try to stand up. Even though it hurts, I manage to get to my feet.
I look around and realize I’m at the bottom of a very high mountain. It’s so tall I can’t see the top. The peak looks like it’s hidden in the
clouds. There is a sign stuck in the dirt. It says: CLIMB.
I look up at the wall of the mountain again. There are pointed stones that line up. They look like they were put there to make the
climbing easy.
“Okay,” I say to myself. “Here goes nothing. I just have to climb. I can do that.”
I’m about to reach for the first stone when I notice something. The wall is moving. I squint my eyes to see better. My heart stops.
Snakes.
They are everywhere. They are perched on the ledges. They are wrapped around the stones I’m supposed to grab. Thousands of them. Long, thin, and dangerous.
“Why are there snakes…?” I whisper shakily as I take a step back.
I hate snakes. Just looking at them makes my skin crawl.
Then, I suddenly remember something from one of my classes. I remember Professor Walker lecturing us about reptiles.
“The only creature that snakes avoid are wolves,” he had said then. “The howl of a wolf makes them scared. It makes them hide away and they fear and respect the scent of wolves, especially Lycans.”
I finally realize why Alpha Poppy said we wouldn’t survive if we didn’t shift. As a human, I’m a target. If I try to climb this mountain, the snakes will bite me. One bite and I’m sure I’ll be dead. I can’t climb as a human. It’s impossible.
I look at my hands. They are small and human. There are no claws or fur.

Chapter 118
“Damn it,” I hiss in frustration.
‘Are you going to stand there and cry?’ Wyndra asks. ‘Or are we going to do this?’
“How?” I ask her. “I don’t know how to make you come out!”

‘You have to want it, Lyra. You have to need it more than you need to breathe. Look at those snakes. They are waiting for you. If you don’t shift, they will eat you alive.’
I look at the mass of snakes on the wall. They are starting to notice me. Some of them are sliding down the rocks toward the ground.
“I need to shift,” I say. “I have to shift.”
I close my eyes and try to feel the power inside me. I try to feel the heat that saved Kai’s heart. I try to find that spark.
“Wyndra, please,” I beg.
I can feel the snakes getting closer. I can hear the sound of their bodies sliding over the grass. I’m running out of time. If I don’t do something right now, this test is over before I even take the first step.
“I am a wolf,” I whisper to myself. “I am a wolf.”
But I don’t feel like a wolf. I feel like a scared girl at the bottom of a mountain.
