Chapter 122
Lyra is a fox. A silver fox.
The legends say the silver fox is the earthly form of the Phoenix. Is that how she did it? Is that why she was able to restart my heart when it stopped? I stare at the screen, watching the white creature move with a grace no wolf possesses.
What other powers is she hiding? The old stories say the Phoenix has wings of fire. Does she have those too? My head feels like it’s ge to explode from shock.
“I thought fox shifters were extinct,” Damon whispers, his voice cracking.
“Apparently, they aren’t,” I reply, my voice raspy
The room is silent as we watch her. The fox is beautiful, blindingly white against the dark mountain. One of the guards standing near ti back finally breaks the silence.
“The King must see this!” he shouts, his eyes wide with excitement. “The girl is not wolfless! She is a fox! His Majesty will want to know immediately!”
The guard turns to run toward the door. He’s fast, but not faster than me.
I don’t even think as I move. In a split second, I speed across the room, stopping him before his hand can even touch the door handle. I grab the back of his head and slam him against the wall.
“Wrong fucking move,” I growl.
I let my claws shoot out of my fingers. Before he can even scream, I slice my hand across his throat. I hit the vein perfectly, cutting so deep that his head lolls back, almost popping off his neck. Blood splatters across the floor and my boots. His body goes limp, and I let him drop. He hits the ground with a wet thud.
I don’t enjoy killing. I may be bad, but I’m no monster like my father. I wasn’t about to let this bastard expose Lyra. If my father finds out what Lyra is, he will hunt her. He will trap her and use her for that twisted hybrid project he’s been obsessed with. I can’t let that happen.
‘Good,’ Vlad rumbles in my mind. ‘Protect her. She is ours.’
‘I’ll never let anyone hurt her again.’ I tell him.
I turn back to the others. Damon, Logan, and the one remaining guard are staring at me like they’re seeing a ghost. Their faces are pale, except Damon. He’s seen me do something this crazy, I walk toward them slowly, the blood still dripping from my claws.
I reach out and grab Logan by the throat. I don’t squeeze hard enough to kill him, but enough to make sure he feels my claws against his
skin.

Chapter 122
Listen to me,’ I say in a dangerous tone. No one. And I mean no one, finds out about this. Not a word about the fox. Not a word abo what you saw on that screen.”
I lean in closer, making sure he sees the red in my eyes. “If anyone finds out, I will give you a death ten times worse than that bastard the floor. Do you understand me?”
Logan nods frantically, his eyes darting to the dead guard. “Yes, Your Highness. Of course, I wouldn’t say a word. I swear.”
I look at the other guard. He’s trembling so hard his armor is rattling. I swear too, Prince Kai! My lips are sealed!”
I release Logan and pull a cloth from the table to wipe the blood off my hands. “Good. Clean this mess up.”
Just then, the air in the room shifts.
“‘Kai! The King is coming back!”* Vlad’s voice sounds sharp and urgent.
‘Put out the screen!” I yell at Logan. “Now! My father is coming!”
Logan clicks on some buttons, and the monitor showing Lyra’s fox form goes black just as the doors open.
The moment King Geo walks back into the room, everyone freezes. The air turns cold. My father stops in his tracks, his eyes landing immediately on the dead guard and the pool of blood spreading across the floor. He stands there in silence for a long moment, his expression unreadable.
Then he turns to me, his eyes suspicious.
“Is there a reason why one of my guards is dead on the floor, Kai?” he asks.
I don’t answer him. I just stand my ground and stare back, my face a mask of indifference. Around me, the others bow their heads, refusing to look the King in the eye.
My father leans down, inspecting the body. He looks at the deep, jagged neck wound, then stands back up, wiping his hands on a silk
handkerchief.
Looking at this corpse,” he says, his voice like ice, “I can tell it was my son who slit his throat. Only a Lycan of your caliber could strike
this fast and this deep,”
He narrows his eyes at me, stepping closer until we are inches apart. “Why did you kill him? Is it because you’re trying to hide something
from your King?”
I glare at him. My heart is thundering in my chest, but I don’t let it show. I can’t answer him without lying, and he’s too good at spotting lies He looks past me, his gaze landing on the blank screen.
Fuck He can’t see Lyra.

My father takes a step toward the screen, his hand reaching out to the controls. I army ourses ady to suffer t here if I have to. I won’t let him turn that screen back on.
“My apologies, Your Highness, Damon says, stepping forward, Prince Kai lost his temper. The guard was being disconti mocking the death of his slave on the screen, laughing about her fall. The Prince took offense to the disease?
My father stops. He looks at Damon, then back at me. A slow, mocking smile spreads across his face
“Is that so?” he asks. He chuckles and shakes his head, ‘I hope these tantrums of yours end soon, ka, it’s a waste I god s
dead girl. You need to get your emotions under control if you ever expect to wear the crown,”
He turns on his heel, signaling for his guards to follow him. I’ll leave you to your mourning then. I expect you at the royal dimer
tonight.”
He walks out without another word.
