The Lycan Prince’s Wolfless Slave (Academy Romance) novel Chapter 139

hapter 139

Kai

The moment the elevator doors slide open, I feel Lyra trembling beside me. Her skin is still flushed from our kiss, but the heat is quickly being replaced by the chill of nerves. I don’t blame her. The Great Hall of the Lycan Palace is not a place for the weak.

“Relax,” I whisper, leaning close so only she can hear. “Keep your head up. I’m right here, and I won’t let anyone hurt you.”

‘I don’t belong here, Kai,” she whispers back, her eyes darting to the golden pillars and the massive chandeliers.

“You’re with me, little fox.” I say, my voice firm. “That’s all the belonging you need.”

We walk into the hall. The chatter of the royals and lords dies down the moment we appear. I can feel the weight of a hundred stares. They look at Lyra with confusion and awkwardness. We reach the long banquet table. It’s filled with the royal family and high-ranking lords. Rina is there, sitting with her parents, her eyes shooting daggers at Lyra. Two other lords from the northern territories sit nearby, whispering to each other. Everyone looks surprised that I’m not here with Rima, my supposed future mate.

The head of the table is empty. My father hasn’t arrived yet. But the Queen, my mother, is already seated. She’s wearing a shiny silver gown and has a perfect make up on as usual. She watches Lyra with a strange look, her eyes scanning Lyra’s face with something like interest or curiosity, but she doesn’t

say a word.

“Sit, I tell Lyra, pulling out the chair next to mine.

Before we can even settle, Roman appears. He looks far too smug for my liking. Why is this fool suddenly here? I thought he hates attending these events? He better not be here because of Lyra. I’ll kill him.

Sure enough, he walks straight up to Lyra and ignores me entirely.

“Lyra, Roman says, his voice smooth. “It’s pleasant seeing you here. You look breathtaking tonight.”

He reaches for her hand and drops a lingering kiss on her knuckles. I feel the growl building in my throat. I start to push back my chair, my vision turning red, but Lyra’s hand shoots out and grips my thigh under the table.

“Kai, please,” she whispers. “Don’t make a scene. Not here.”

I grit my teeth so hard my jaw aches. I glare at Roman until he finally moves away to take his seat.

The heavy door at the end of the hall swings open. The herald shouts that the King has arrived, and everyone stands. King Geo walks in. He moves with a heavy, powerful stride, his presence darkening the room. He stops when he reaches the table, his eyes locking onto Lyra immediately. He freezes for a second, his brow furrowing in genuine surprise. Then he looks at me with a questioning gaze. I almost want to smile and say ‘you thought she was dead, huh? but I stay quiet and just stare at him.

“Well, was under the impression that your slave died in the testing chamber, Kai,” the King says, his voice cold and loud. “How is it that she’s alive and breathing and even stepping foot in my palace?”

I open my mouth to reply to my father, but Lyra beats me to it. “I almost died. Your Majesty.” Lyra says. Her voice is clear and confident. “But I was determined to survive. So I climbed my way out of that mountain because I wasn’t finished yet.”

King Geo narrows his eyes. He looks at me, then back at her. “And why is a slave present in this gathering? This is for those of royal blood, not for wolfless playthings.

Chapter 139

Beegnice I wanted her to see the kingdom I’ll one day inherit,” I say, my voice matching his coldness. My father stares at me as if he wants to yank my head uff. I almost want him to dare to attack me. But he doesn’t. He just stares at me.

The tension between us is so thick te other guests are looking down at their plates. My father looks like he wants to strike me, but he simply takes his seat

at the head of the table.

“Wait!” a new voice breaks the silence. This is the wolfless girl everyone is talking about? Lyra Diamond?”
