The Lycan Prince’s Wolfless Slave (Academy Romance) novel Chapter 140

hapter 140

“I heard you’re quite strong-willed, Lyta, lax says, his eyes roaming over her. “You’re quite popular at the Academy. And beautiful, too. It’s no wonder my brother and the Crown Prince are so hung up on you.”

Lyra’s face turns bright red. She looks down at her lap, feeling shy.

“I’m Jax,” he says, winking at her. “Maybe we can grab some coffee later? I promise I’m not as troublesome as the other two.” he winks again. Right in front of me. I’m going to kill this bastard.

I start to stand up, my hands curling into fists. I’m going to jump across this table and beat the teeth out of his mouth. But Kara, who is sitting on my other side, reaches over and firmly holds my arm down.

‘Kai, ignore him!’ she says through our mind link. ‘He’s just being an idiot.’

“Enough,” the King snaps. “I’m tired of hearing about my son’s slave. Let’sall move to the ballroom and dance.”

He stands and offers his hand to the Queen. Before they walk toward the dance floor, he stops and looks at Lyra. His gaze is dark and predatory.

“I would like to have a word with you some other time, Lyra the wolfless girl that cheated death.” he says in a sort of mocking tone.

Lyra pales. She looks at me, fear written all over her face.

I turn her around to face me. “Don’t worry. I’m not letting you out of my sight.” Lyra looks unsure at first but she nods like she trusts me. A part of me desperately wants to earn her trust.

Music begins to play. Couples move toward the center of the hall. I turn to Lyra and hold out my hand.

“Dance with me,” I command.

“Kai, no,” she says, shaking her head. “People are already staring. I don’t know how to dance like this.”

“I’m not asking, Lyra,” I say, my voice dropping. “Dance with me, or I’ll pick you up and carry you onto the floor in front of everyone. Your choice.”

She glares at me, her eyes sparking with anger. “You’re such a jerk.”

“I know,” I say, pulling her up.

She reluctantly follows me. I lead her to the floor and pull her close. One hand on her waist, the other holding hers. She’s stiff at first, but then she starts to follow my lead. For a moment, the world feels almost normal. I can smell her hair, feel the warmth of her skin.

But then, I suddenly feel a prickling sensation at the back of my neck. Vlad stirs, his ears twitching. Something is wrong

I scan the room. The guards are at the doors. The royals are dancing. I turn my head toward the far end of the hall, where the massive floor-to-ceiling windows look out into the dark gardens.

In the shadows of the trees, I see it. Two glowing, deadly blue eyes.

My heart stops. Then I see the flash of a weapon. A blue arrow in a bow. I recognize that glow anywhere. Demon fire. It’s a poisoned flame that kills shifters

instantly.

Chapter 140

The figure in the dark aims. The bowstring snaps. What the…?

The world goes into slow motion as I watch the blue streak of light cutting through the air, fieading straight for Lyra’s head. She’s smiling at something Kara said, completely unaware that deaths inches away.

I don’t think. I don’t breathe. I just move.

I throw my weight into her, shoving her as hard as I can. She gasps as she flies out of the path of the arrow.

Thwack.

A searing, white-hot pain explodes in my chest. I feel the arrow sink deep into my bone. The demon fire immediately begins to eat at my insides, a burning agony that makes my vision go white.

I hear screams. I hear the sound of chairs overturning and guards shouting.

My knees hit the marble floor. My breath comes in ragged, wet gasps. I can’t feel my arms anymore.

“Kai!”
